Cola Drinks

Shameful admission: I love cola drinks, specifically Diet P. So it's not the sugar rush that does it. I only drink it at the weekends and can take or leave coffee/tea so it's not the caffeine rush either. And if I'm really thirsty I tend to go for a glass of water. But sometimes the taste & texture of the cola is the only thing that satisfies me. It's a mystery.

With regards Cola and the stomach, both the Big Two cola drinks were originally marketed as stomach tonic.
Hence the name Pepsi - from 'peptic', which is stomach related.

Culture Shock story:
One of the things that caused me to literally drop my jaw here in Lux, was someone being served in a local bar "Colawein" - a 50/50 mixture of coke and white wine in a pint glass....

Yup! I was actually going "Whatthefu**" and bobbing my head from side to side...
This is a white wine producing country, remember, which makes it worse.....

There should be no excuse for even producing white wine, in opinion.

Luxembourg white wines: a brief intro
Grown on the Moselle, so very like the German wines from the same river valley.
Can be very headachy-sweet, but there are some pleasant surprises.
The cremant (champagne equivalent)is rather good , and affordable enough to have une coupe as a regualr pre-dinner aperitif
I feel that since I'm living in a wine growing region I ought to get to know the local produce.....

Similar story...
Whilst resting my weary feet after a vigorous stroll through (European town), and ordering a beer, I happened to notice someone at the next table drinking a dark beer. Great, I thought, I'll have one of those (my attitude to lager being somewhat similar to B's to white wine)...turns out it wasn't what I expected (and thank BoB I'd asked the waitress first) - it was lager with cola.

There is a Basque drink which is:
Half very cheap red wine
Half cola product of your choice
Plenty of ice
The only disadvantage is that it turns your tongue a funny colour and makes you burp. Apart from it's a top student/festival drink. It has a great name (which I've forgotten) in Basque as well.

In Spain they do a 'summer wine' which is red wine mixed with a lemon or orange soda drink - it's really not too bad as long as there is plenty of wine in it and not much of the other. Kind of an 'instant sangria'.
Re: white wines. I do prefer red wines but have discovered a lovely Spanish white wine from the Rueda district. Very dry yet fruity. Nice. It's the only white wine I drink here. Though I also don't mind some chardonnays (especially Australian chardonnays, but some Californian ones are also okay) as they have more body than the usual whites.
IMHO the *only* Spanish reds are either from Rioja or Ribera del Duero.
And the only soft drink I consume on occasion is either Schweppe's orange or lemon - they aren't too bad.
