Lady in a tree

I can nod off very easily in a darkened room. The worst time this has happened is when I went to Las Vegas in 2001. We spent over $100 each for a ticket to see Cirque du Soleil's show "O" at the Bellagio. It was the 10.30pm performance so we went for a meal beforehand. The combination of a belly full of food, a warm and humid theatre and a very hypnotic performance had me nodding off! smiley - yikes I kept having to ask my b/f to nudge me awake - it didn't always work though and I am afraid that I slept through a lot of it. What I did see was amazing and I still beat myself up over the fact that I spent so much money and only saw half a show.

smiley - zzz

i can never fall asleep in under an hour. i have such a hard time trying to sleep that it really bothers me sometimes. when i was in grade school, we had a camping trip to some place and we were all in cabins and everyone would be asleep and i was there just laying there and didn't get to sleep until almost morning. that was awful!! i really could use a nap right now!

My partner tells me that I fall asleep within seconds. When I gave up caffeine for a couple of months I slept longer and deeper and I had no problems sleeping before I stopped drinking tea or coffee. So I can recommend stopping tea , coffee and cola if you want to sleep better.

What is wrong with some people? The obvious solution is don't go to bed till you're tired. I never go to bed until one, often much later. I fall asleep in about two minutes probably. But I don't bother trying, either.

You've obviously never suffered from insomnia. For me going to bed seems to be a surefire cure for tiredness.

In the UK half nine = 9.30 - everyone understands it. It seems to be just a colloquialism however, since Americans often don't understand if that means half an hour until nine, or half an hour after nine. Like in German, "halb neun" (half nine) would mean 8.30.

Well I'm american, so I didn't know. And hey, it could mean half of nine like nine over two or 4 1/2 or something.

I guessed 9:30, too, although it makes sense that it could also be 8:30. Hmm... saying 'half nine' for 9:30 could be a great way to mess with people here on this side of the pond! smiley - cool

There's a cute passage in the book "Ramona Quimby" by Beverly Cleary, where first-grader Ramona thinks "Quarter after Eight" means 8:25, since a quarter is 25 cents, and she's late to school.

A first-grader, by the way, is a little kid about eight or nine years old.

I hate to quibble, but in the US first graders tend to be more like 6-7 years old. The Ramona books are cute though, even if it's been at least 10 years since I read any of them.
