"With scoffs, and scorns, and contemelious taunts."
Spawned from the 'God Delusion' thread at the request of some of the participants.
Please note that a taunt is typically insulting, but an insult isn't necessarily a taunt.
'To reproach with severe or insulting words; to revile; to
upbraid; to jeer at; to flout.'
But I don't expect you ignorant lot will be capable of understanding this

I don't think this is going to bloody work. It's not about anything. It's lacking in aboutness. It's all well and good to announce that everyone is a putz, a blighter, a Republican, but we're not announcing what their a putz, a blighter, or a Republican about.
That was the good thing about the thread that spawned this one: it was about something. It was about the stupid idea that one can build one's life around a belief which is clearly and demonstrably utter shite.
Now, that's something to taunt someone with: "your fundamental, life affirming beliefs, the thoughts which give you the reason, nay, the energy, to slide your slimy carcase out of bed each morning, the ancient maxims, commandments, and guiding principals which allow you to open your snotty nostrils and breathe the morning air -- the simplistic bronze-age moralizing that lets you get through your day is, well, frankly,
ancient, bronze-age, sheep-shagging, moralizings that really has no connection to the modern world and little connection to the bronze-age (except the sheep-shagging, of course)."
You see? That taunt has aboutness.
Probably should be on the original thread.

Are heckles the same as taunts? I've heard some pretty good heckles at music performances. In one case, a good musician was listening to a band perform. After one song, he said, "That sucked. Play one you know." In another case, Texas great Steve Fromholz (whose on stage gear includes longneck beers) stopped and said to the audience, "I can't rmember the words to my own song." From the audience, "Well, maybe you can remember some Jimmy Buffet."

Musical heckling/taunting:
'When is the band starting?' (preferably halfway through the headliner's set)
'Freebird!'
'What the F*** is this S***!?'
'Sack the singer!'
General taunts:
'If I thought you could run in those heels I'd stand further away to insult you luv.'
'Fancy trying that one again? like, not at practice speed'
and a classic, yelled across a street at a friend of mine:
'Oh my GOTH!'

I'd say heckles are taunts in a specific context.
There are also jibes, and barracking.

Steve K. Posted Oct 22, 2007
I don't hear "barracking" used much here in the US, had to check my dictionary:
1.Chiefly British. To jeer or shout at a player, speaker, or team.
2.Australian. To shout support for a team.
Sounds like a change of meaning happened while rounding the Horn ...
Here's a favorite from the movie "The Breakfast Club", the class smart ass is talking to the varsity wrestler:
"I wanna be just like you. I figure all I need, is a lobotomy and some tights."

So Pommie bastards and Aussies can unite in barracking the Wallabies in rugby.

Disturbingly, this thread seems to have made 'quote of the day'.
What ignorant jackanapes chooses these quotes anyway?

But don't the Bruces and Sheilas talk about "sledging" rather than "barracking"?

The Bruces and Sheilas: that could be a group, like the Mamas and the Papas.

Well, California is a state, so shouldn't it be something like 'New South Wales Dreaming'?
