Whilst I fondly remember reading comics in my "yoof" it is not something I can say that I have done a lot of recently.
Yet after watching the excellent "Comics Britannia" I purchased "Watchmen" by Alan Moore and I have just finished reading it.
I'll repeat that...
It is absolutely fan-effing-tastic. Jaw dropping good. Like all the best bits of watching a really good film and reading a really good book. What on earth have I been missing!
So a pal has recommended that I continue my "Graphic Novel" journey with "Batman Year One" and "The Dark Knight Returns" both by Frank Miller (I have muchly enjoyed the recent films based on his comics). Any other recommendations from the hootoo comic reading fraternity?
(Ferrettbadger BTW if the Haiku is confusing)

I recently started reading the Sandman stuff again and really had forgotten why I had made so much fuss about it.
As for Watchmen, LiftLiker leant me a copy several years ago. Fan-bleedin'-tastic.

Sorry, I might not have been too clear there:
Neil Gaiman's Sandman: read it, starting with Preludes and Nocturnes.

Quality, Gaiman is one of my very favourite fiction authoers so I can imagine I owuld like any graphic novel he had anything to do with....
Oooohhhhhh!!!!! I am so excited..... I have discovered a new load of stuff to enjoy... brilliant.
And given that I have to catch loads of train journeys all the time these days this will be ace stuff to read.
Hell Yeah!

I remember the day LiftLiker leant me Watchmen, and he said 'This is one comic that you won't be embarrassed to be seen reading during fag breaks.'
That was about 1992. Innit funny the things that stick in your head?
I fully concur about 'Dark Knight Returns': it's superb.

They seem to finally be making a movie of Watchmen, they´ve been talking about that for over a decade. Not that the other Moore movies have been anything to brag about.
I´m not that impressed with what I have read by Gaiman so far. But Moore´s stuff is mostly brilliant. You should read the two League of Extraordinary Gentlemen volumes that are out. A third one is on the way. It´s comics made for people who read books, with literary references in each picture.
Also I would recommend The Ultimates. Superheroes with global politics, flawed people and realism.

Ahh Xanatic have you read either "Neverwhere" or "Stardust" these are my two favourites of his.

I haven´t read those yet, but I have a signed copy of American Gods I´m going to work my way through.

I liked American Gods, but it is perhaps a book best enjoyed when one has already immersed oneself in the world of Gaiman fiction. I owuld heartily reccomend reading those others first.

Another vote for Sandman (recently got a gift of a signed copy of A Game Of You ) and Preacher - Garth Ennis & Steve Dillon - for twisted atheists.

Warren Ellis's Planetery is a favourite of mine. It's another very literary work. It references books, films, urban myths, and the whole of comics history in some way or another.

ooh, I was gonna say Preacher! Awesome work!
I'm personally rather a fan of Slaine too... It doesnt necessarily 'say' much but it's good filthy celtic fantasy fun... The books of invasions are out at the moment. His son is sexy as hell
V for vendetta worked nicely in book form.
I'm hoping to get the Buffy graphic novels now they are hardbacking them...
As for Neil Gaiman. hm, I've only read his novels, myself. Not a huge fan. For me, good stories, dont get on with his style Cant wait for the film of stardust though!
Watchmen keeps cropping up in SFX magazine, they covered it a bit recently. casting and so on, It's in development hell but i believe it is moving along, there's a lot of fan impetus behind it, if collective will works at all, this film will be made!
I also like Judge Dredd and Durham Red. Oh, and Sinister Dexter. Can you tell I used to read a lot of 2000ad?

Slaine - Books of Invasions written by Pat Mills and beautifully inked by Clint Langley
By all accounts the new writers of Hellblazer aren't doing to shabby a job either (I've not read it for a few years but have been seriously tempted of late)

If you like Slaine (and I do) then you might be interested in going back to the source material: Herself got me into "The Book of Invasions" by a bloke called Fitzpatrick, which is a beautifully illustrated re-telling of the very earliest Irish myths and legends. The Morrigan in her human form is a foxy goddess who is literally to die for...
