Why is the President still in charge?

Why is President Bush still in charge? For anyone that saw his ratings-winning broadcast last night, it must seem a tad ridiculous that this jingoistic bumbling fool is the figurehead for the most powerful nation on Earth? At risk of stirring up a poo storm, discuss...

Baadmonkey:
I am a Liberal but I want him to continue until the election. Why? Because he does far more damage to his party than we liberals can! I stirred the "poo" in my office, a fellow cubical resident has a picture of Bush and his wife promeniently displayed with a caption, via postanote, that reads "The Liberal's Worst Nightmare". I commented that it was more like the "Conservative's worst nighmare". He asked why and I told him because Bush is the biggest joke! It didn't set well!

Er, because you'd have to overturn the US Constitution? Something that one or two people might get upset about.
Bush is your punishment for failing to go out and vote in sufficient numbers.

Granted, we get the government we deserve, or "hell on earth". In either case the complacency of the American voter is something that is difficult to correct.
I, myself, do not trust anyone that can play the political game enough to be even selected for the position of President, thus I have yet to vote FOR anyone, I have always voted AGAINST.
There is a lot to say for allowing your opponents enough rope to hang themselves.

Good grief, you mean to say that you think he actually is in charge? The shots are being called by Dick Cheney and other proponents of the 'New American Century', a proposition that Dubya probably can't even spell.
Bush is a figurehead, a hostage to those that paid for his elections - Petro-Chemicals and Arms Manufacturers.

Blue Shark:
Even a figure head can weild power. I've read many "stories" about Bush and some seem to indicate that it he actually "decides" to weild that power, which by our system of government, is rightly his (I'll not argue whether he "stole" the election the point is his is IN office!) then all those that think they "own" him would be very, very, sorry.
Damn! THis sounds like I am a Bush supporter. No, I detest him and the cronies around him. Although you would be corrupt to get to his position, you can not say his is stupid, ignorant perhaps but not stupid.

Like Reagan Dubya seems to be a fairly smart political operator, something that doesn't require the IQ of Einstein. I'm more worried by my own PMs absolute submissiveness to everything that comes out of the White House. One reason advanced for the UK supporting Bushs foriegn policy so we might be able to provide some wise advice, restrain their excesses etc, act as wise Greeks to the brash U.S. Romans

It would be interesting to see what would happen to the US/UK axis if the rumours are true and Blair steps aside in the autumn. IF Gordon Brown does takeover and brings back the likes of Robin Cook et al, then we could see the US's 'staunch ally' finally start asking its boss to justify their actions and not merely rubberstamp them.

That would be fine, if England was actually doing that. It appears though that Enlgind is not so much "moderating" the US's actions as running interference.

I agree, but thats the line that liberal apologists for Blair push over here
I'm not a fan of any of the current Labour leadership but I suspect that any of them would be better than Blair on this issue

I think looking at September 11th, and how Bush at best knew about it beforehand, he should have been impeached. Though I think it is true, Cheney is probably the real power. But we could still do worse than Bush & Co.

Bite your tongue! I don't want to waste a perfectly good research/moon base site on THEM!! They're sure to muck it up before they die of incompetence.

after much reflection, i've decided i'm going to vote for bush.
the n° 1 issue (eyeraq) is hopelessly lost; not even spielberg could put a happy end on that one.
let's take an objective look at kerry: another waffling self-serving business-as-usual egomaniac. brought up in swiss boarding schools, married to an ex-colonial heiress... his only good point is he's not bush.
why choose the lesser of two evils? choosing the greater of two evils (quote question: "worse is better"...???) may bring america to the point where REAL change will come about. four more years of bush and then let's have REVOLUTION!

No matter who wins, we'll have it anyway (revolution, that is).
NO country can sustain such a widening gap of economic condition indefinitely. 'Bout time, too.

I think the situation here in the US is already revulting enough! Although I would agree in prenciple with your reasoning, we can not tolerate any more reduction of our civil liberties that would most assuredly occur under Bush.
We already have the "Secret Police" arresting people they don't like and people for expressing their constitutional rights, one of the most recent was the questioning of a high schooler over his artwork.
I am saddened that someone like Bush is in office, saddened that someone like Ashcroft has power. I am even more saddened the my current state of residence will most assuredly support Bush, but what can you expect for Okeys!
