He had his way with dragons. Doesn't matter that the RCs haven't sanctified him; in fact that makes it even better, methinks.

Another of Tolkien's books, Farmer Giles of Ham, is a pretty entertaining reworking of the George and dragon myth.

Fair enough on the stem, well spotted.
I dont have a *problem* with St George, not even with the fact he was foisted on us by the church of Rome, but for reasons Ive gone into on other threads anything from Tolkiebs LOT stuff is right out of the question.
How about Big Daddy as our patron saint?

Yes it's all just a little too WASPish ain't it.
I find Tolkien easier to swallow (in small bites) if you substitute words like 'kibbutz' for 'shire' and 'rabbi' for 'wizard'. But that's way more work than reading ought to entail and, for a'that and a'that, it's still the same vain story of hope and glory.
