I don't think one should do something solely for the sake of non-conformism. (Example: I like listening to Dave Matthews music in the shower. The fact that he's disgustingly popular doesn't prevent me from listening to his music...) I think doing something because other people don't is prob the wrong apporach; perhaps one should instead focus on doing things because you think they're what to do.

I wasn't trying to say that the only reason I don't get a haircut was that I'm a non-conformist, nor was I saying that I don't enjoy things that other (presumably normal) people enjoy. I haven't disposed of popular culture, I just take it with a grain of salt.
Nor was I intending to offend spiky-haired people. I was mearly makeing a comment. They could probably hide some very sharp things in there, pointing in an outward direction...
And besides, several of my friends have long hair. Several have short hair. Who's to say why something is done?

That Stupid Boy was the first guy I have liked that had long hair since I was about 14. I was really into spiky haired guys for a long time after that, especially guys with mohawks. And I was into the shaved headed fellas for a while. Now, what really matters to me about a guy's hair is that it fits him. As long as he doesn't have a mullet.
I agree with loreth that one shouldn't do something just so they won't be like verybody else. That's just like doing somemthing to be like everybody else. But, don't get me wrong, if one doesn't conform to society's standards, one should be proud and show it off. But not just for the sake of being different.
jb-you do know that I was kidding up there, right? You could say I was just 'joshing' you.
Anybody seen SLC Punk! ? If you haven't you should, it's one of the best movies I've seen all year. But, maybe I'm just biased because it reminds me of how my life used to be. If you wanna know what kind of guys I used to date, see that movie.
Here's something back on topic (remember back ages ago when we had one? ), why do I feel like I need to have a love interest to be happy? I didn't think that I did, but last night I was feeling down, now that I don't have anyone to like. Am I crazy or what?
why girls are girls
Potholer Posted Mar 13, 2000
You're not crazy. That's the way we're designed. Even ignoring mating instincts, we are social animals. We're programmed to get pleasure out of caring about other people, or even pets, livestock, wild animals or bits of rainforest that we'll never even see. I hope that doesn't sound too cold, it wasn't meant to be.
Also, regarding something you said a couple of weeks ago about marriage, bridal magazines, etc. As far as I can tell from observing friends, women do seem massively more interested in the whole ceremonial side of marriage than men. I don't recall hearing many *men* talking about how they had to get a whole brand-new hat-to-shoes outfit just to go to a wedding.
Presumably that helps explain the magazine thing - a large amount of the magazine revenue is probably from advertising overpriced cosmetics and bridal clothes, and men neither care enough about the presentational side of the whole event, nor spend nearly enough money to make bridegroom magazines similarly profitable. Economics is often as powerful an explanation of events as social conditioning, though usually the two are intertwined.

Suitably joshed.
Am I a non-conformist? Yes. Because I don't really like what the majority is doing. I don't agree with them, and think that sometimes, they are very wrong. Sometimes.
BTW, on the movie, GreyRose. I've seen trailers, and been meaning to rent that movie for a while. All the more incentive.
I think Potholer hit the nail on the head. Twice. I don't know if I've felt driven myself though. Maybe I'm a misanthrope...

No, Potholer, you didn't seem cold. You're right as far as I can tell. Especially for me. I'm a textbook Cancer and Cancers are all about taking care of people/animals/things. I figured out that that was probably why I liked TSB (That Stupid Boy) so much. He was/is so inexperienced and I wanted to take care of him and protect him. OH well, his loss.
Rent it! Rent it now! When I first heard about it, I thought it would be stupid, but then I saw a preview for it and thought maybe it could be good, and now that I saw it I can tell you. . .it totally rules!

jbliqemp... Posted Mar 14, 2000
Actually, after I posted here, I ran down to the video store and rented it. I have it for five days, plenty of time to watch.
So is TSB a person, an animal, or a thing?

As a child my parents used to tell me "Kiddo, you're a character."
Never mind the fact that I didn't know what that meant, I had a response. My mantra:
People are people, animals are animals, and characters are characters.
I try to live by that.

That's certainly true. I'm into heavy metal, and the number of "freaks" on the scene now is quite disturbing. Now I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with the look (Coal Chamber, Cradle of Filth etc.) but most of these guys spend so much of their time "wanting to be different" that they don't seem to realise that they've all ended up looking the same.

Too true. That's a big problem with the punk kids, and they always give me an attitude because I don't wear the uniform.

[male] }What I want to know is, how do you deal with girls? I mean, I've recently met a female clone of myself, who has moved in; I now know part of what Mew had to deal with those first few months after the Ash Incident*, except that fortunately for Mew we're both guys.{
[the female, whose name is Vekura, enters]
[Vekura] {Are you sure you want to know that?}
[Mew] "Mew!"
[both male and female] }{Shut up, Mew.{}

Are girls girls? Were they ever?
BTW I used to know a girl with traffic light hair. When she was really happy in a relationship it was red, when she was unsure it was yellow and when it was over (or just before) it was green!

I kind of like it when it is well done. Badly done makeup can be really horrible. I don't think girls should do it every day, I think it should be more of a special-occasion thing.
