Seriously though, a bit of an explanation would be nice (unless the explanation needs an explanation etc. etc.)smiley - erm.

I'm an Opera user too and am keen on keeping my M$ usage to a minimum

cygwin & mingw are posix layers for MSWindows to enable the running of *nix(linux/bsd/etc) programmes on MS Windows machines.

X-free & the rest are ways of emulating the *nix graphical environment (i.e. the X-server).

Have just move to Windows XP after experiencing unstability on Win '98.
Am interested in checking out linux but am wary of using it on top of windows. Does the above software cause any instability in Windows?

Get partitionMagic* and split your hard drive into two partitions. Install MS Windows XP on one and Linux on the other and select the OS at bootup time.
That way they will be blissfully unaware of each other so no problems will ensue.

all the above are designed to run on windows, they are not a separate operating system like linux or the BSD's so you can just uninstall them like any other window programme if you experience problems. That said I'm on XP & run without too much griefsmiley - winkeye

If you are interested I strongly suggest you visit the appropriate web-site and read the documentation. I would recommend cygwin/xfree as the best place to start.

I would be most impressed if you could compile MacOSX to run on Intel hardware, or are you planning on doing that for an encore? smiley - winkeye
