Has Political Correctness had it's day?

"POLITICAL correctness is overwhelmingly unpopular among the people it is supposed to be helping, according to a poll showing that four in five questioned are fed-up with it."
http://www.yorkshiretoday.co.uk/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=55&ArticleID=1924792
"When asked "Are you fed- up with political correctness?" 72 per cent of people living in Britain who do not describe themselves as "white British" – because of their race or nationality or both – answered "yes"."
"Most of this political correctness seems to be carried out by white, male, middle class do-gooders with a guilt complex, who only serve to help build up resentment that wouldn't exist otherwise."
Hear hear
BTW, I am well aware this study was commissioned by a group with an agenda, but show me a study that isn't.
Do you agree with the findings?

Who would have thought it, I disagree with SWL .
Part of the problem is that so much of the things reported as “Political correctness” are tosh, made up or altered to suit the political agenda of those newspapers etc who report them. The idea that we should live in a fairer society in which people are not discriminated against is still IMHO just and valid.
For example the whole ficticious “War on Christmas” that the right wing tabloid press bang on about every year, using some half baked examples. It is un-reflective of the actual ideas behind “political correctness”.
I do not doubt for a second that there are not some people who mis-understand and take things too far, but in reality this is no more reflective of the whole movement, than saying that one suicide bomber makes all muslims violent (sorry SWL just could not resist).

I agree that there is no organised "War on Christmas", just as there is no room full of guilty white men issuing edicts, but there do seem to be a surfeit of briefing papers and press notes that are written by people trying to justify their own jobs. IMO, people are sick of public figures mincing words and mangling the language in an effort to avoid causing offence where none would be taken.
One of the non-existent Xmas stories:

That story is four years old. Perhaps it isn't such a big issue, except in the minds that go looking for it?
As for PC, it will always be important (and right) to avoid behaviours and words which offend minorities. It's not ok to use N-----, P--i, D--o, etc. These are blindingly obvious, but I don't think it's just the most blatant offenders which should be made unacceptable. As for it going too far, well, it probably does sometimes. Big deal.
And what FB said.

The poll is nonsense and this thread is nonsense unless you define what is actually meant by political correctness.
When you do that, you usually find out that is doesn't really exist, or is simple politeness and respect for other cultures.

A definition then -
Political correctness: A trend that wants to make everything fair, equal and just to all by supressing thought, speech and practice in order to acheive that goal.

Surpressing thought? Huh? where does that happen.
However speech and practice hell yeah I am all for that. If people do stuff or say stuff that causes unfairness and inequity then I am all for it being challenged.
Dont you want to live in a fair society SWL?

You're missing the point FB. It's the very fact that the groups supposedly in need of protection are also saying that PC is nonsense that questions the whole necessity.

Hmm. A longer version of the same shite. Quoting someone else with an axe to grind (but who gets a mention on wiki*) isn't *really* trying harder.
Although it's good to know what Marxists are up to these days.

Does it?
Acorrding to whom and what?
Are the respondants reflective of the whole community?
How was the survay carried out? Was it designed to produce this result?

Is that the same, blinkered-to-the-point-of-just-about-lying version that you've defined though?

FB, go ahead, knock the survey by all means. Doesn't change the result any. I pointed out that it was probably weighted in Post 1.
Tell you what, let's hear an alternative version of PC then. One where it does some good. Convince me that I should bow down at the PC Altar.

The date on the site is Wednesday December 20 2006. Are you on a different time-line to me? If so, can you look up next week's Lottery Results and I'll split it with you 50-50.

What survey? They asked one question without providing an explanantion of what they defined as PC. It's utter drivel of the first order of the type that local papers in all regions delight in.
Same old same old. As is this thread. The same old lazy b*ll*cks about 'the war on Christmas', which doesn't exist and has nothing to do with PC anyway.
But I'll play the game. Let's have a single, concrete example of this suppression of 'word thought and deed' that is enforceable by anything other than a 'bloody hell, you can't say that'.

"let's hear an alternative version of PC then. One where it does some good. Convince me that I should bow down at the PC Altar."
I think there's probably a fair point in saying that PC is a loaded term by definition. It's a bit like asking "Is murder good or bad?" rather than "Are there circumstances were taking the life of someone else may be justified or necessary?"

And the Red Cross, as an organization, is inherently full of it. Always has been and always will be.
Hardly lions led by donkeys, but certainly good people led by asses.
