If you have a CD and no case, should you put it label up or label down to minimise damage?

I keep on hearing people stating both.

I usually put them label up, on a spindle if i spare one. Best solution is to buy some cheap slimline cd cases from a pound shop, though.

I would definatly say label side down. Unless the surface you're placing it on is contained within a vacuum in a clean-roomsmiley - bigeyes, it will have grains of dirt and dust big enough to scratch the surface when you pick it up or place it down. There will always be a certain amount of dragging involved when you try to pick it up, unless you place it label-side up slightly overhanging a desk to allow a 'clean' pick up...

Just make sure you don't end up putting a mug of hot coffee on the playing surface...

I always place them label down, because of the aforementioned dust/crumbs/etc., makes sense to me.

On freecycle the other day, someone in my area was offering a bag of empty CD cases - I wondered why anyone would possibly want them when I saw it. Now I know smiley - ok

STRANGELY STRANGE ( A brain on a spring )

This is quite interesting, for recordable DVD discs I tend to end up with spare cases as the discs are so easily damaged, but CDs being more indestrucable I tend to end up with more CDs than cases as CD cases tend to crack or get trodden on!

Come and live in a house with a four year old! We have had to replace so many DVD and console game boxes, due to being trodden on, we have had to buy a supply of empty ones! Really rather annoying when it's an XBox game coz you can't distinguish between them and the PS2 ones (because the replacements are black)

My recordable DVDs tend to come on a spindle of 50, you should see my kitchen shelves! smiley - laugh
