Captain_SpankMunki [Keeper & Former ACE] Thanking <Diety of choice> for the joy of Goo.

I need to specify cable to an Italian. However my italian language skills gets me as fas as: Whatsa matter you? Hey! Gotta no respect. Shuddupa your face. - which I would rather not have to use.

Back to the point. The Italian engineer needs to source the cable locally which means I need to get the specification right.

So I need him to buy:

8-core, stranded 17/0.2 low voltage (60V a.c. max) 1 Amp and around 4.9mm diameter.

The same for the six core cable.

I can find all sorts of words for cable, strand, wire, etc in babel but have no idea what's going to make sense.

Liam.

What do you mean by "stranded"? Is that each bit of wire in the cable is isolated (insulated?) from t'others?

Stranded as in not solid cable - the conductor is made up of 17 strands of 0.2mm diameter copper.

What does the basso bit mean in basso voltagio?

smiley - cheers and a very belated Happy New Year!

No help with Italian, but do it like this. Pick a really good multi-national cable company for the sorts you need (and with 6 core, sounds like Belden would be a good bet). Then quote a manufactures type number, but send instructions in English. No translation problems, and no risk of misinterpretation on the technical parts of the cable spec. They probably have the same catalogue in their own language - and this works everywhere, not just Italy.

Right, having just checked with a guy who knows a bit about electrics an stuff, the full phrase is:

" Cavo a basso voltaggio (60V massimo corrente alternate - i Ampere) ad 8 trece "multi-stranded" (17/0.2) di diametro pari circa 4.9mm"

Do you need some phonetic assistance?
