My niece married there 10 years or so ago.
It isn't cheap and you need to reside in the area for a minimum of 21 days before wedding.
The ceremony is the normal civil marriage, with extra to be paid to go to have the anvil struck!
Oh..and you need to book at least 12 months in advance.

Gretna Green sounds romantic - but isn't, in my opinion.
There are far lovelier places in Scotland where you can have a civil ceremony; basically, anywhere you can talk a Registrar into doing the deed for you.
I've heard of couples getting married at the top of mountains and the bottom of swimming pools. I believe one couple tied the knot whilst parachuting.

Our next door neighbours when I was growing up ran off and married at Gretna when they were teenagers.
I think the whole appeal of the place is probably doing the traditional running off to get married thing.
Most people who want to do it on their own go further afield like Las Vegas these days.

I think Gretna Green sounds more like it should be the name of a silent age movie star.

Getting married in Gretna is an industrial process. Expensive and IMHO a rip off. Find yourself somewhere mor attractive and if you want to go to Gretna go and find some bargains at the Gateway Village, that's the real face of Gretna.

I married Mrs 'monkey in the grounds of a big hotel in Gretna Green.
In those days (late 90's), I think I'm right in saying you couldn't get married out-of-doors (which we wanted to do) in England, whereas you could in Scotland because there the service-performing guy was licensed, not the building.
My original intention had been to do this for nothing, but the hotel grumbled a bit and so I booked a dozen of our close family in for a feed and a bit of a drink up afterwards. We booked a couple of rooms as well, but most of our party stayed in B&B's around the town, and the actual event was thus nominally free.
We did bung the minister something in his collection plate on the sunday morning, but apart from that the whole business was cheap as you like.
And we didn't have to reside there for 21 days at all.
That said - and not that I regret it for a moment - I agree to an extent with those disparaging it. There are a million nicer places in Scotland alone, and I believe the laws regarding where and how you can get hitched in England have relaxed a lot since then.
