Sorry Peet,
I had just rather forgotton about this thread when the camcorder entry came up on my search and it rather reminded me....

Not a problem.
I usually append an "appropriate" smiley just to let folks know I've read their posting...

SEF Posted Nov 23, 2003
From cross-referencing with a couple of archives, I found the following EG entries had been deleted at some point:
A204328 "American TV Evangelists" from 17th Nov 1999
A308602 "Persepolis, Iran" from 8th June 2000
A374889 "Cannes, France - 8 February, 1998" from 23rd June 2000
A291359 "Cigarette Butt Foraging" from 26th June 2000
A322282 "Dope Wars" from 30th June 2000
The names of the last two give a hint as to why they might have been deleted (though not why they were previously acceptable).

They are all pre-Rupert entries, SEF. It seems very likely that they did not survive the transfer to the BBC for some specific reason.
Don't forget that a lot of the early entries were - not to put too fine a point on it - crap. They were short, scanty, inadequate and not necesarily funny.

Sounds like a big shame,Cigarette Butt Foraging sounds like a quite funny entry to me!

If memory serves, "Dope Wars" was a game based on Gilbert Shelton's "Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers"...

Anybody who's been missing this thread for its entertainment value might want to pop over to the "Today" message board...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-perl/h2/h2.cgi?thread=%3C1086785576-16469.16%40forum1.thdo.bbc.co.uk%3E&find=%3C1086785576-16469.16%40forum1.thdo.bbc.co.uk%3E&board=today.day&sort=Te
To summarise, they seem to have decided that any discussion of the inadequacies of the board system itself is "off topic", and will be moderated away. After much "robust discussion" the Host, in an apparent strop, has ordered the Mods to fail *all* future posts to the thread whatever their content...

I'm not sure what Today is so I'll just stay out of that one.
I have noticed it's been much quieter around here lately. I don't think the dragons have been slain. I think the Quixotes have just gone away.

"Today" is the BBC's breakfast news show, running on Radio 4 Monday - Friday between 6am and 9am.
It's probably the most influential radio show on the planet, especially if you take into account the fact that it was revealed that British Nuclear submarine commanders *must* listen to it on Long Wave; if three shows in a row are missed without a good explaination being broadcast they have the authority to assume that Britain has been lain waste by nuclear bombardment, and can launch their missile loads without further orders.

Apologies if this is in the backlog, but this delection isn't listed in SEF's post above: has anyone any idea what's so offensive about Cartesian Dualism, A698349? The unedited version -- whether it's been altered to make it acceptable or not I don't know -- is alive and well at A674101.

>> British Nuclear submarine commanders *must* listen to it on Long Wave;
That gives rise to so many questions.
1) Is that why longwave was kept as a broadcasting medium - Take R4 off Longwave and we'll turn the world into a nuclear wasteland? That's one hell of a pressure group!
2) Is there no other way that they talk to the Subs?
3) In what circs would they not be able to talk to the Subs while R4 was still broadcasting 'Today'?
Actually I know an ex submariner, I am going to have to check this one with him next time I see him.
Fab factoid though!

RFJS__, yup, that one's a puzzler.
I think it's been mentioned before on this thread that, in the case of an Edited Entry, the line "However, the author can easily re-write it so that it doesn't break the rules, so let's hope they do just that." is an out-and-out lie.

Unless it was found to be plagiaristic, I can't see anything in the unedited version of the Entry that contravenes the guidelines. There's an attached thread in which the original author expresses puzzlement, so presumably if anyone got a moderation e-mail, the Sub-Ed. did.

I put various key phrases of the original version through Google before replying, and the only result was the h2g2 page. With some others that got removed, that method found paragraphs or even whole dissertations that had been "lifted" wholesale from other sites. That wasn't the case here.
Key: Complain about this post
