A Question about Microsoft Word
QueenBronners - Ferret Fanatic Started conversation Jun 11, 2003
You know in Word how you can put an asterix before and after a word and the word will change into bold - well, does anyone know if there are other shortcuts like this, eg for italics or underline? I can't find the answer any where else, so I am hoping that H2G2ers will help me out.
Thanks very much

underscores _ should do underline and / should do italics. I can't confirm if this does apply to Microsoft Word, but thats the convention.

Thanks for writting back DrMO.
I just tested your suggestions in Word, and the underscores turn words into italics and the / doesn't work at all!
I will just have to keep on questing for this knowledge!
Drat Microsoft for not obeying conventions...

Strangely, in Microsoft Word, underscores before and after the word converts it into italics. Slashes do nothing.
Holding down Ctrl and Alt and then typing a, e, i, o or u will give you a rising accent over the letters: á é í ó ú
The automatic spelling correction in Word (adn --> and) also does a few handy things like convert (C) to a copyright symbol.

hmm, very odd. try things like -=+|%&# and see what they do.

If you type $*£%, does the word 'f**k' appear on your screen?
(Apologies Mods, but this post wouldn't be funny if I'd censored it )

I think it works the other way round B, the work infringes upon the MS ethic. just like the words compleat and debuging.

You can set up the spelling corrector to do that if it tickles your fancy. A friend of mine set up Word on his wife's computer to change every occurrence of the word 'the' to 'bastard' as she typed. Since she is a touch typist, it was quite some time before she noticed.

Back on subject
Try pressing
ctrl U for underline
ctrl I for italics
ctrl G for Bold
(when you've finished the phrase you're typing just use the same key functions to turn the feature off again)

My favourite, because I do a lot of newsletters and stuff which needs to fit exactly onto a number of pages:
Ctrl+[ - Font size down 1
Ctrl+] - Font size up 1

I also find Ctrl + Shift + + for superscript and Ctrl + Shift + = for subscript very useful!

many Thanks to everyone that's answered my question. With knowledge of these shoertcuts I can nip through all my work and leave early. (In an ideal world that would happen, in my world it will just result in more work!)
