The opening credits were designed by John Bird, the man responsible for other work such as.....TARAAAAAAA....... The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

I reckon that the original Dr Who sequence, with visual effects, in Black and White, to a kid born in '59 was definitely the best. Today's version bears nowhere near the same effect.
