What's the best Sci-Fi theme tune?
swl Posted Apr 4, 2006
Hey, I've got 6 days left before I rejoin the rat-race. My brain is locked in a small cupboard under the stairs until then.
Besides which, I offend people when I open my mouth in the Big Boys' Threads.

You've never offended me...

Or me, babes... There might be time for that though
Another favourite of mine has to be the theme from Firefly (or maybe that's just because Nathan Fillon is soooo scrummy )

Dr Who has to be the best. Delia Derbyshire and the other in the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, electronic music pioneers
Thunderbirds is another cool one. Was the tune you're thining of Pump Up The Volume by M/A/R/R/S ? (ack, I want to listen to that tune right now!) which has the 5,4,3,2,1 bit at the start.

The song with a bit of Blake's 7 in it is 'Music' by...er... I forgot. You know the one, "Music was my first love, and it shall be my last, music of the future, and music of the past..." and so forth.

Flight of the Sorcerer perhaps?

Journey of the Sorcerer? Not really a Sci-Fi theme since DNA pinched it shamelessly from an Eagles album (wasn't it One of These Nights?), but still a great piece of music.
Original Who theme: best. theme. EVAR. Delia Derbyshire. The Murray Gold version - the current outing - is also dead good. Bill Bailey does a superb Belgian Jazz version (Docteur Qui), with some intriguing lyrics ("Ils voyage dans le . C'est un boite du telephone. L'interior est beaucoup plus grande que l'exterior! C'est le mystere du Docteur Qui!")
Main titles from Firefly - lyrics by Joss! And if you get the DVD boxed set, Joss sings it.
I'm surprised we've heard no mention of such stalwarts as The Imperial March from Star Wars, or the the famous tone sequence from Close Encounters.

So many possible answers, so little time...
For sheer take-you-back-to-being-seven value, it has to be the Dr. Who theme tune (ideally the pre-1981 version), especially the "scream" bit at the end of an episode.
John Williams is responsible for many of the great themes - I especially like the theme from "Jurassic Park" and "Star Wars" - but to my mind his finest work ever has to be "Duel of the Fates", the climactic theme in "Phantom Menace". Stirring, emotional, exciting, powerful and memorable are just some of the things I wish the film had been... but that that piece of music was.
I also like the theme to DS9 a lot.
Anyone remember the thudding theme to the "V" mini-series?
Ron Grainer's other great theme (other than Who that is) was "The Prisoner".
I assume that nobody is going to bother to start a thread entitled "What's the WORST sci-fi theme tune?" because a thread consisting entirely of people posting the word "Enterprise" would be boring and pointless.

Thanks for that Geggs, it's been driving me crazy .
Yep, it's 'Music' by John Miles that has the Blakes 7 musical interlude in the middle, i always missed the title.

Nope the very, very worst one was the original bagpipe rave from the first series of Andromeda...The Enterprise one was quite decent in comparision.

I have two thoughts...
The riff from unfortunately short-lived "Firefly."
The clean Boston Pops version of Season 3 of "Lost in Space;" not the original scratchy version and certainly not the revamped techno version from that so-called movie.

Does anyone else remember this spooky little number? Ok it's not really a tune, so much as a series of noises, but it used to scare the living bejazus out of my little sister back in the 70's.
