Wildman - I'm not really mad, I've just been in a very bad mood for 40 years!

A large plate of the magic soup please, garsong! smiley - winkeye

And while you're here, can I get an order of this 'community history of h2g2' stuff?

Seriously, if a few of the low numbers (italics too?) could get together and come up with an 'Early days on Hootoo' article with stories and gossip of what things were like in the 'good old days', I think DNA servers might have to work overtime. Well I'd definitely read it anyway! smiley - grovel

So would I. And I'm some 35,000 U-numbers below Wildman.

I'm not the only one to have had that idea. In fact, I think an initative was started, 'Area 42' I believe it was called. It was located at U189013 and U189069 but doesn't seem to have been touched since early 2002.

Probably for the best - it strikes me as a little bit elitist.

I think a single article from a low-numbered researcher would suffice, giving a view of how the site has changed over four years, while maintaining that all views are stricutly those of the author and shouldn't be taken to have any imprtiality etc. etc.

That last sentence has somehow come out to mean the opposite of what I intended. Please re-adjust for smiley - ale consumption.

I think a 'potted history of h2g2' University Project or ongoing Post project would suit it well. I would encourage the input of as many h2g2 Users as possible, but of course it would need to maintain editorial direction. But hey, what are Sub Eds for?

Alcohol consumption (or in my case, not) aside, I think there is a danger of elitism, and no-one likes that (except of course the 133t). But if enough people are involved that shouldn't be a problem. And it wouldn't be intended as a nostalgia trip but a place for newcomers to have an understanding of what, as it were, they're getting into. It would also serve as a useful reference for debates that come around again and again, questions about what events caused policy changes and people to be banned, etc.

Don't all civilisations have some kind of historical knowledge base? And we're a very civilised bunch here on h2g2. smiley - tea

A civilisation founded on a knowledge base, if you will.

Which makes us (possibly) a quasi-civilisation.

No single researcher could do the history justice. We were a small community back when this place was mostly fields, but we weren't so small we could see into each other's bedroom windows...
