Then you hhave no idea what cheese and pickle is, let me try and explain, first of all it's a popular sandwich filling, pickle is a brown sweet tangy condiment made of vegetables, vinegar and the like, you could try Branston's homepage if they have one, toasted Cheese and Pickle is nice and so is Pickle mixed with mayonnaise

Sounds very similar to something we have here, called pickle relish, made with gherkins (minced pickle, maybe a little minced onion and carrot, and a vinegar base) or with dill pickles (same but with a dill and garlicy taste, much rarer though).
Mixed with mayo, we call it "sandwich spread"....
My cats run from the stuff, though!

Not too fond of sandwich spread, our pickle is a little different to relish, it's sooooooooo difficult to describe

Attempt at describing Branston pickle (that is the one we are referring to right?) for our US chums...
It is a sweet/sour brown relish made with cooked vegetables (onion, zucchini, etc.,) chopped and pickled in a thick version of your A1 Steak Sauce.
In fact - here is a recipe
http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/9412/branston_pickle.html
...it is an ideal partner to a nice bit of Cheddar!

Mango chutney is rather nice with cheese too, I prefer cheese and mango chutney to cheese and pickle now.
Branston pickle is really nice mixed in with Baked Beans though. The only trouble is that you get through a jar really quickly.
Gosh I'm hungry now, and I've only just had lunch too!

Branston's Pickle, huh?
Thanks! I'll have to go to Rose Tree Cottage in Pasadena or Tudor House in Santa Monica and see if I can find some. Only places I know of in L.A. which specifically carry British foods and candies.
They also carry Cornish Pasties; does anyone know where I might find an authentic recipe for those? My mom's were great, but I don't think they were "authentic". My cats DO like them, though, from the little bits I give them...
