sounds very similar to what has happened here, but with the addition of the uk government having a knee-jerk reaction to want to be able to lock up the mentally ill without treatment, proper diagnosis, or hope of release.

Back in the day, suicide was illegal as it was a 'Crime against God', being that you were killing one of 'God's' creatures... And yes, people actually were locked up for it...
