I've always been one for adding a little extra colour, but I still know when I started going grey cos different brands have differenct effects on grey. You know you've got a problem when you have to change brand!
And yes, it was in my 30s.
But hair dying is all part of the ongoing maintenance schedule whether you're grey or not. No different from mascara or lipstick.

Amy: ear-deep in novels, poetics, and historical documents.

I haven't noticed any grey on my head yet... my mom went greyish in her early 40's, I think (outside of the requisite grey hairs from childbirth with me and my sister), and my dad started right after they married, so around 22.

Me, I don't think I'll mind going grey. Whenever I do - I'm keeping my hair long. None of this short curled stuff for me.

My mom started going grey at 16. I started at 20, so I had 4 extra years! smiley - winkeye

It didn't *really* start showing until I was around 30, and I let it grow that way for a while, because it looked cool. When I reached around 35, it was at the 50% saturation point, and it looked dull, so I started coloring it again. I'm thinking about letting it grow out this summer, though. We'll see how long that lasts! smiley - winkeye I get easily bored, and I change the color all the time. I'm going to grow it long then too, so at least I can mess with the style if I get too bored. smiley - diva

my mum's nearly 60, and her hair's still more brown than grey, so hopefully i'll take after her...my dad didn't start going grey till he was around 40, i don't think, so another good omen...but i'm also going to keep my hair at least mid-length, not short...it wouldn't suit me at all smiley - yuk

Of course, my Dad says that it doesn't matter what color your hair is, as long as it stays in your head! Spoken like a man with the Jean-Luc Picard look! smiley - biggrin

It's the in-between stage of hair loss that looks worst - the thinning patches on top. Always a shock with someone who's taller than you when you catch sight of the top of their head!

Do you people have any idea how many experiments are carried out on animals for hair dye?

Because of the amount of chemicals it contains (look at the packet to see) each one of those chemicals is tested on poor animals.

Rabbits are used a lot, chemicals are squirted in their eyes, until they are in obvious pain. To name just one of the many.

And for what - Your vanity!

What's wrong with being grey anyway?

It's funny how its a common misconception that women don't go bald, but male pattern hair loss also occurs in women.

As I've had my hair coloured for years, I have no idea the extent of grey hair on my head and that is how its going to stay until I'm at least 60.

I have my hair low lighted with vegetable based hair dyes, as my hairdresser is an animal lover.

Incog - Yes you can dye them! I'd check out the precautions and stuff first though. On the net though. Don't burden anyone else with this issue! smiley - laugh

GT - Not all hairdyes are tested on animals...not that I care personally. But I have vegan friends, and there are quite a few brands that don't.

smiley - ta Saturnine.

I'm female in my 40's & I've got grey hair. smiley - wah I have in the past dyed it a few times, then one day I looked at the back of the packet, noticed all the chemicals thought of all the poor smiley - catsmiley - bunnysmiley - mousesmiley - esuom that had suffered, not only is each chemical tested indiviually, but then combined too. I vowed then & there to never use a hair dye again.

I'm reaistic enough to realise I can't aviod everything that has at some point been tested on animals, we don't live in an idea world.

Can you tell me some of the makes of hair dye that are 'animal friendly'?

It takes much longer to set the colour, and your hair stinks for days...and if you get any on your skin it goes a lovverly rusty yellow for a week...but who cares?

Trouble with henna is, despite its reputation as a conditioner, it is very drying especially if your hair is already dry. I'd far rather use a vegetable dye but they just don't work for me.
Boots reckon they don't test their cosmetic prodicts but have stopped putting "Not Tested on Animals" on everything. Seems to have been since the law on animal testing changed (ie banning it for cosmetics) but I don't know if the 2 are connected.
I realise that many of the ingredients will have been tested on animals, but I dont think (in Europe at least) that further new testing is allowed.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong...!

Hmmmmmm, and who is overseeing that the animal testing on cosmetics laws are not being bent or broken? I'll bet there are loop-holes that allow it to continue, under a different name.

From what I've heard so far, I think I'll stay grey. smiley - biggrin
