i was in an offsite discussion where someone said its normal for women to start going grey in their 30s, but we don't know this anymore because so many women dye their hair.

is this true ?

i stared going grey around 30. i don't dye so it will probably be fairly obvious by the time i'm 40.

Mym mum only started going grey in her late 40s (my dad in his early 40s) and it only started to become obvious once she hit 50.

But she has always had people comment on how non-grey her hair was so I think she is a lucky oddity rather than the norm.

My mum's 55 this year and is hardly grey at all - hopefully that's passed on in the genes! Although I think she plucks out the odd few that pop through. She's got fabulous dark red hair so everybody thinks she dyes it anyway!

I thought I was going grey once, 3 ugly stiff wiry things popped up on my forehead, I was very, very stressed at the time and thought that may be the reason, so made a concerted effort to chill out. I plucked them and haven't had any more since! smiley - biggrin

My girlfriend started to go grey when she left home to go to university. So that would be eighteen. She dyes her hair though, so I don't know to what extent it is grey.

Both my parent went grey at an early age, but none of us have the wiry type, its quite fine and almost white. When I'm older I *might* just go white in one go, saves the growing out stripe. But that's not for a good few years yet smiley - biggrin

I do get stressed though smiley - sadface

My other half is going grey (but you can't tell under whatever colour she has decided she wants this month) while her sister also going grey, but prefers a more natural looking (but also artificial) colour.

Meanwhile, I maintain my natural colouring, its just that I'm getting taller than my hair smiley - winkeye

My Mum started going grey around her late 30's...but my grandmother didn't get one grey hair in life. She died at 71 with a full head of black hair!!!

And I once had a grey hair at 15. Someone spotted it during science class, and had great laughs poking fun at me. We pulled it out and I haven't (thankgod) seen one since...

Can't remember when my mum started going grey, but it was a quite an advanced age - she'll be 80 this year & still has some brown in it. I've only got a few grey strands (if you look for them) at 48.

Is it true that the darker the hair generally the earlier it goes grey - or is it just more noticeable?

My husband (once black hair) had visible grey streaks in his mid 20s & is now all grey/white. Funny how some stay streaky grey, others go clean white.
My Dad had beautiful white hair - looked very distinguished.

People go grey at different ages. When I was at college, I knew a boy who started to go grey in his late teens. My dad was going grey for as long as I can remember - from his early 40s, I think. My mother-in-law is in her 70s and her hair is probably white, but she dyes it. My mother, on the other hand, is also in her 70s and has a single lock of white hair (probably no more than 20 hairs in one group) at the back of her head. It doesn't show because of the way she combs her hair. As I take after her in a lot of ways, I probably won't go grey until at least my 70s.

Oh, and men use 'anti-grey' preparations too. So there!

I've always had a couple of grey hairs, but over the last year or so I've noticed a lot more appearing - now they're pretty obvious whenever I look in a mirror under bright lights smiley - sadface

I'm 28 now and I reckon I'll be dying my hair to cover the grey by the time I'm 30 (it's dark brown, so it shows!). I seem to remember my mum started dying her hair about that age as well.

I think on the whole red hair goes grey a lot earlier than most other colours. One of my cousins who is a redhead has started going quite grey (she's 35) and both my parents, who had red strands in their hair/beard respectively, both had them go grey a lot earlier than the rest of their hair which was brown
*feeling smug because her two sisters are redheads while she is a brunette smiley - biggrin*

Zantic - Who is this woman??

I got my first white hairs a couple of years ago, when I was 24.There is no grey hair in my family...you go white, an absolutely lovely bright, shining white....and it's soft and flyaway...I'm looking forward to it.

I have what is commonly referred to as dishwater blonde (or mousey brown...whichever you find more offensive.. smiley - winkeye )

24 is really good for my family...my Mum started going white when she was 19 and dad when he was 25. The aunt's refuse to answer the question, but I can't remember them with non-dyed (or natural white)hair.

And though I do dye my hair the white hairs refuse to take the colour, so I'm currently red-blonde with a few white hairs and dirty brown roots smiley - winkeyesmiley - bigeyessmiley - laugh

(and before anyone sez anything...I know I have a serious need to redye....but I can't be bothered at the moment) smiley - biggrin

I started noticing grey hairs at age 19. At 28, I'm still not grey enough that people can tell at an easy glance that I'm going grey, but when I get a haircut, the falling locks are heavily salted.

I don't mind, either. I've got such a young face that I've been carded buying cigars recently, and I work with a bunch of old people. I think it'd be cool to have that Steve Martin look of indeterminable age, and it would probably help me get respect when I meet up with coworkers I don't deal with very often. There are coworkers I deal with every day who are sometimes jarred when I tell stories that establish my age as greater than my appearance would suggest.

My wife has a few here and there, and she's 23. I've also got an old high school friend who is showing a great deal more grey than I am.

My mother's family does that shining white thing. My grandmother has had beautiful white hair for as long as I can remember, and my mom is so jealous that she can't wait for hers to turn. Alas, at age 50, hers is but a salt-and-pepper not much greyer than mine. Meanwhile, her younger sister started turning at 19, and wants nothing to do with grey, so she's been dyeing her hair her entire life. She probably has that fabulous white hair now, but nobody can say for sure.

I started noticing grey hairs my senior year of university, around the time I was taking my senior machine design classes. I like to say that those classes turned my hair grey.

I've got a grey strand here and there.
