(I seem to remember you being asked that not so long ago, Xan.)
There's not much out in them thar fens other than agriculture or service industry, I would say. How's about you get a job in a holiday area from Easter through summer to tide you over while you look into something new.
Are you qualified as a nurse or anything related? Perhaps you just need to get some more qualifications and the job you are in now might get better. Of course, if you do have the top qualifications, you might find you are being underchallenged and could look for a similar job somewhere else but starting higher up.
Either way, it's a shame to waste the experience you have gained doing what you do. Perhaps in hospital or hospice administration?

I didn't mean to be rude. I just wanted to know a bit more about him before I gave any advice.

I didn't mean you were being rude. Sorry if I gave that impression. Many people are in that situation, and it is quite a good idea to turn to the community here as flat-baja did, and as you did, a while back.
I hope you both find your paths in the end.

There is a book called "What Colour Is Your Parachute?" which is supposed to be good for finding out these things. I'm re-reading it at the moment.

Define "better".
What is it about your current job that you dislike - the money, the hours, the frustrations, the paperwork, the lack of promotion prospects, the people you work with?
What would be your dream job?

I agree with Lucky Star, before you look for another job you have to first decide what you actually want out of it in the first place. Otherwise you'll never be happy no matter what you do.
I don't mean that to sound critical btw, it's just that if you don't know what you want out of life, how will you know when you have found it? Take some time to write a list of what you want from life and what you desire from a job. You might be surprised at what are really the most important things to you.
Oh, and don't be tempted to say 'money' as one of your aims. That will just show that you haven't really thought about it properly. Money in itself means nothing, it just provides the means to get some of the things you actually want from life.
Think about it, then when you've decided what you want, post your aims here and we all might be able to suggest a job that will help you fulfill those ambitions.
I think you're right to look to a career change though, as care for the elderly is something that requires dedication. If your heart isn't in it then you're right to look elsewhere.

Money may not be a valid aim, but a comfortable lifestyle, and no financial worries is a perfectly good and admirable aim.

True, but aim for the lifestyle, not the money.

Of course money is a valid aim. To some people. It may not be so to you, but there are those who think possession of large quantities of wonga is a very worthwhile aim and spend most of their lives in pursuit of such.
You and I may think this very shallow and ultimately dissatisfying, but that doesn't it is so for them.

"know a bit more about him "
Given their PS I think you may have the wrong pronoun there
As for flat-baja, I guess you could always take up banjo playing, still popular in the fens I hear

I won't tell if you don't. Anyway, there is already a badger cult, so a flat baja is at best a spin-off of that!

well after nearly a year im back on line thank you very much for your advice, but i decided it wasn't the job it was the man!
so i left him!!
i realised i enjoyed the job and that it was him that made me feel that the job was worthless.
But as life tends to do to me, every thing changed.
to cut a long story short im now living near newcastle and working as a lab tech.
Which has made me think that it is care that i want to do and am now looking for another job in a home.
thanks again

Wow! That was one hell of a life change.
Seems you have plenty of confidence and should be ok if you switch jobs again.
