Why Is It hidden Away!
Chronicargonaut Posted Nov 5, 2002
Why doesn't H2G2 have a seperate category for itself on the BBCi Homepage? It seems to be hidden away along with CULT TV in the entertainment bit.... Its probably because of Douglas Adams 'connection' with TV Sci-Fi (Hitch Hikers, Doctor Who), but H2G2 isn't just about Cult TV or science fiction...is it?

I want to know why h2g2 is a folder "/" and not a subdomain h2g2.bbc.co.uk?

I can see why TPTB wants to keep some kind of separation between sites. It's a bit like trying to make new species - if there's too much interbreeding with the main one, the potential separate identity can be continually erased.

Dr Hell Posted Nov 6, 2002
I guess it has also something to do with the fact that h2g2 is not originally a BBC idea, hence the separation - I think it's also better that way. There are still some people around who remember the pre-Rupert times. (During Rupert there was a site called n2g2 (nowhere 2 go 2) - Anyone knows what happened to them? Are they still around?)
Must go now...

Hi Bob...
IIRC h2g2 was initiated by Douglas Adams and cohort Mark Moxon as a BBC independent site, they even had (quite decent) commercial banners to finance the whole thing. After a while the site was offline and after a (relatively long) intermezzo h2g2 started out as a part of BBCi.
That intermezzo was called "Rupert", and during that time many researchers were panicking in fear, that h2g2 would be gone forever. So some of them started a new site n2g2 "nowhere to go to".
Many things changed from "pre-Rupert" to "post-Rupert" times. For example the site has become a lot more politically correct. Some Edited Entries from "pre-Rupert" times would probably not make it nowadays.
Please, someone, correct me if I am wrong. I would also suggest some people with more insight to start a (perhaps) collaborative Entry on that topic. Could be nice.

A slight correction, it was started by Douglas Adams, Richard Creasey and Robbie Stamp. Mark was brought in a few months later when they realised they needed an Editor. but otherwise correct.

Dr Hell Posted Nov 6, 2002
A-ha... What about you Italics start an Entry about that? (Just suggesting - I would be quite interested in that)... And what happened to Creasey and Stamp - do they contribute, did they write Entries?
Thanks Mina,

You'll still see Richard Creasey online quite often in your 'who's online' box - ever wondered who Richard was?
Although nowadays he seems more involved with 360 than with h2g2.

I agree with Chronicargonaut, why is h2g2 hidden away in the 'Cult' section of BBCi.
Isn't it supposed to be a quasi-encyclopedia/reference site?

Try clicking on the 'Categories' link in the BBC toolbar at the top of your screen, we get our own section there!

I would still like to know why it's not a subdomain ie, h2g2.bbc.co.uk?

Like Gnomon, I have backed up all my entries.
It would be nice to see more of Natalie online too. It is always good to see Mina and the other visible italics. But - hey - Natalie, de-lurk and talk to us, eh?
