"Absence does for love what the wind does for a flame: it extinguishes the weak, and feeds the strong"
Wow that's a great quote. I wish I had known that saying a few months ago when I got married to my long distance man as I would have included it somehow. There are a lot of cynics out there, but don't let them confuse you. It's true like all relationships they can be good or bad, but distance proves you are prepared to put in a lot of effort to keep things alive and must be special for that alone. Long term goals should be compatible for things to work as the situation can't go on for ever without one of you wanting different things.
I look back on so many fantastic weekends when we were able to see each other - always making the most of every minute. I also look back on dreadful goodbyes after them. But it all worked out in the end. Reunions are fantastic - I'm sure yours will be too.

Good to know it is working out so well for you TAD.
You said: 'Long term goals should be compatible for things to work as the situation can't go on for ever without one of you wanting different things.'
That is true of all relationships, not just long distance ones, of course.

My closest friend (ie. inseparable) just left today to go travelling round Europe today for what seems like ages Instead of hours of phone conversations, MSN until the internet refuses to work anymore, constant emails and loads of text messages, all i now have is the occasional brief email from the odd internet-café.
What makes this even worse is that a month after she gets back, she's leaving for crappy university I really hope our long distance relationship works.

You should arrange to talk to her on the phone - calls to Europe are pretty cheap if you get a calling account, y'know... and 'm sure she'll appreciate it too.
University is an awkward one... but, hey, they get holidays... you'll be fine

Why don't she connect up with researchers here? I would know one or two places in Germany...

Aw, cheers 26199 and Tube
She isn't a researcher here at h2g2, so meeting up with people from this site would be a bit scary. I'll probably be doing the whole travelling thing next summer though, and it would be really cool to meet up with some people from this site. I'll have to have a serious think about that idea...
As for a calling account, i *should* have arranged one but didn't think about doing it. I'll suppose i'll just have to get by with the occasional whiny email.
I do hope that university isn't too awkward. Perhaps i'll get her to join h2g2 so i can litter her space with annoying messages. That would be fun.

Hmm... if you have a credit card, Rocket Man, you can set one up in a matter of minutes over the phone... put £10 on it... and when you've used that up you don't have to use it again...
The one I use is Planet Talk, [Unsuitable link removed by Moderator]- a very big point in their favour is no hidden charges at all... you pay the per minute rate and that's it.
