Do long distance relationships actually work?
U190482 Started conversation Jul 1, 2002
Due to no fault of my own, I have become involved in a "Long Distance Relationship". Being on opposite sides of the earth is a strange experience, of which im very new to.
Anybody got any experience/opinions on this matter?

I have, I met Andy a couple of months before I went to Uni. I went to Cardiff, he went to Burnham on Crouch in Essex. We got married three years later and we are still together nearly three years after that!
If you want it to work and it is meant to be, you will be fine....

That *is* long distance (and also an amazing coiincidence - namewise )
Did it all work out?
Personally I'd steer clear of a long distance relationship but then I've never been forced into one which is probably why I'd rather not.

Hmmm... mine was Munich, Germany - Sydney, Australia...
And yep, very fine article. I really enjoyed reading it and it is just too true sometimes.
If long-distance-relationships work out:
Dunno, mine did or did not, depends on your point of view.

Perth and Perth
I do however think there is a big difference between a relationsship where you were together but moved apart, and one where you started out over the internet.

I would agree with that, the whole physical aspect doesnt really exsist.

So you only know each other over the internet then?

No, ive never spoke to her on the internet, I don't have a computer and neither does she.
All our communication is done by the ol phone.
I also think the lengh of seperation plays a big part in this scheme. Ours is 3 months, which isn't even half way through yet, it drags.

I just wanted to know if the relationsship started out in RL or over the internet. I guess if she's only gone 3 months and you knew each other before, you have a good chance.
BTW have you considered webcams then?

As some have noticed, I am definitely familiar with this topic. I've had long distance relationships of both sorts - those that started IRL, and those over the internet.
I think it's a matter of honesty, patience, and commitment. It's hard, I know, to wait out long lengths of time. My current situation puts me an ocean away from the object of my affections. No, we haven't even met yet. Hard for a lot of people to understand, I know. It's hard for me to understand. As we've asked each other before - How can you miss something you've never even had?
Mine is even more complicated by the fact that he goes offline for weeks at a time because of his job. So not only do I not get to see him, but half the time I don't get to talk to him either. But there are ways around ALL the obstacles. None of them quite as good as being together, but.. I think if the relationship is strong enough, and the communication is open enough, and the patience is there... It can all work out.
I only WISH it was only 3 months till I got to see him Not to undermine your impatience at all... I know exactly how you feel. But, above all else, I have faith. And as long as we provide each other with the emotional support that we both need, a few more months until we can share in the more... physical things, (like being able to see each other ) can be overcome.
Best of luck to you!

BTW, I'm in US and he's in South Africa. That's... a long ways away (although I've not got the nerve to find out exactly how far)
