Not being a member of any of the volunteer groups I'm sorry if I'm butting in.
I don't know whether those proposing a move to hotmail / msn have seen this
http://theregister.co.uk/content/6/25610.html
There's also a link from that to a similar story about Yaboo
Both refer to charging for pop3 email access but so far yahoo haven't stopped free pop3 access which I use to collect messages from a number of adhoc groups.

A couple of points
Now that people know how to do CC list can they also remember to use the BCC option (unless of course you have every bodies consent to pass on there e-mail address). I for one am totally p****d off at people passing on my contact details willy nilly
And remember Hotmail is pretty poor at wot is dose:
Only 2mb of storage – there are big name people that offer up to 15MB (If you’re a real you can get a lot more than that).
No POP access (ok, hotmails has got the weird http thing that only outlook express understands) BUT there are suppliers that offer true pop access which means you can use any client in addition to the web interface.
No Security, there are e-mail providers that offer OpenPGP encrypted email & digital signing.

The yahoo pop acess is good but as you have to agree to recieve spam in order to get the pop access is it really free as such ?

Bald Bloke - just visited the link - you/the article is talking about POP Mail Retrieval not POP Access

Happy
As you say on Yaboo you have to accept some spam to have the free pop access, I've found that by going through the options to leave only 1 catagory ticked I now only get about 1 yaboo spam a day (or less on good days )thats low enough for my delete key finger to deal with.
The most annoying thing at the moment is the number of ads including popups which you have to click on to close, they are sticking on the groups when you are reading them online

Ha... I only get one spam-mail a week off yahoo in return for pop access (which is the only way I normally access my yahoo account).
I actually prefer using a shell account for E-mail though so the yahoo account is just a sideine for me.

Here's a quick comparision;
Yahoo
http://mail.yahoo.co.uk/
6MB of storage & Free POP access if you sign up for “Yahoo! Delivers” in the options section (this means you agree to receive a limited amount of advertising mail – (I have a filter set up that sends it straight to the trash folder ))
Web service works with most browsers (I’ve even managed to access it using a text only browser).
Lycos
http://www.lycos.co.uk/service/lycosmail/
15MB of storage & Free POP access – I cannot comment on spam as I don’t use this service.
Web service works with most browsers.
Hushmail
http://www.hushmail.com/
2MB storage space and OpenPGP encrypted email, managed PKI solution & digital signing. No POP access.
Web service works with most JAVA enabled browsers.
Hotmail
http://www.hotmail.com/
2MB storage space, no POP access but you can use Microsoft Outlook Express as a remote client using a unique http mail protocol.
Web service only seems to work with MSIE
My advice though is be a and get a shell account.

Yahoo is either getting desperate or greedy. I'd probably vote for the latter, considering how many corporate customers they have (Pepsi, etc) in tow. Things like POP3 used to be free there. But then, they didn't used to feel the need to inform you they were selling all your information to the highest bidder, either.
*sigh*

Oh yeah, and for those who are simply looking for an alternative to Yahoo mail, I'd like to suggest myrealbox.com ... Use it as a POP/SMTP account, IMAP, or web, with no twiddling with the account itself. All configurations are handled within whatever client you chose to use at the moment. They have different web interfaces to chose from (I prefer WebAccess in those).
However, I believe the orignal poster of this thread was replying to the announcement asking for suggestions to alternatives for the hootoo volunteer scheme email groups, and therefore was correct in posting it to the announcements forums. ;->

Don't know if it has been said before but Y! has become nastier than a hungry moskito. (Talking of the eGroup web space: ) not enough that there's an ad banner on every page but if you skim through messages then every third or fourth page is a *pure* ad . Needless to say they append more ads to any posting sent out to the group.
Furthermore: I've got a cookie from them but once every day they ask for my password again .

Yeah, I hate that about the password thing. The only site on the net that thinks it's endearing itself to it's users by not remembering the damn password!

My Opera browser informs me that a script is trying to read my password every time I log on to Yahoo, but I obstinately reply No! (have to do it twice before I'm allowed on) - for some reason I get less spam greetings on my Yahoo Messenger if I do that, but I've no idea why those two things should have anything to do with each other..
