The Clangers
There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho Posted Dec 4, 2005
Well, let's face it - just as with most TV shows, the actors were still getting used to their roles in series one. Major Clanger was still a bit stiff-upper-lipped, Tiny Clanger was yet to become the lovable scamp we all knew, and the Soup Dragon had yet to find her motivation, as had the Metal Chicken. Small Clanger however was right on the money from series one, episode one.
I mean - just look at the first few seasons of The Simpsons - nothing like what was to come afterwards.
Er, you don't think I'm taking this all a bit too seriously do you?

2legs - Hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side... Posted Dec 4, 2005
Personally, and although I'm more than famuliar with the arguements opposted to this point of view, I find the first series the best, mainly because it is so fresh and live and just more 'natural', in my view at least. By the second series it was almost as if they'd lost the spontanaity of the first series, where I think I'm write in saying there was a lot more adliping and made up on teh spot action and plot on screen. The portrails the earlier series are just fantastic in my view, and the second series just fails slightly to recapture this, altuohg of cours eI've nothing agains tht esecond series, but as good as it is the first origional series just had the edge over it....

The Clangers! Now there's a memory that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. As a child I enjoyed all episodes, and, unfortunately, haven't had the opportunity to see any since, so unable to give a critique as to which series is better or worse. I can however tell you that may cat (RIP Pusspuss) enjoyed them immensely, and used to sit on top of the TV cocking her head side to side as they 'spoke' and batted the screen with her paw trying to catch them. I miss The Clangers. I miss Pusspuss.

Wasn't there an episode of Doctor Who in which the Clangers appeared?
The Master was locked up somewhere, and the Clangers were on the television he was watching. But he doesn't seem to realise that television is only a one-way medium, and so tries to start communicating with this strange alien race, in their own language.
Quite a bizarre few moments of entertainment ensues.

Gnomon - time to move on Posted Dec 5, 2005
I think Peter Firmin knitted them himself, but I'll try and find out.

According to the BBC Cult website, it was Peter Firmin's wife who knitted them, but it doesn't give her name:

That site also gives a link to the Video Clip of The Master watching the Clangers on TV.

I think the BBC websites all insist on Real Audio.
Peter Firmin's wife, who knitted the Clangers, is called Joan.
