Enterprise - New TV Series

The Darkness

I watched the new Enterprise TV Series. The one set in time before Star Trek. With new fantastic effects etc etc.

It was rubbish.

Scott Baccula, the guy that played the captain. He was rubbish too.

They even had rubbish weapons and no idea what time of day it was.

It was all very depressing. I don't know why they bothered really smiley - sigh.

What did you think?

I thought it was all right. *stepping above the parapet*
I don't usually pay much attention to effects anyway. If someone said 'the space shoot-out scene was stunning', I'd usually think 'yeah, I suppose it was quite fun'. The series so far has rather caught the idea of them wandering around in space without a clue, while big events are going on. I think swimming with blue whales would be a good metaphor. I rarely notice 'bad acting' either, unless it's _really_ bad. Admittedly, 'Enterprise' is not Star Wars, but the characters are human, with flaws and mannerisms as well as skills and good lines.

Not seen the new series yet, but thank god it isn't Star Wars. Star Wars has always seemed to me to come from the "cool! Lasers" school of science fiction, and I'd hope Star Trek would go a little deeper than that.

After the horrible acting in DS9 and Voyager, it's a bit refreshing to see the mediocre acting on Enterprise. Also, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt because it's a new series, and they're still getting used to their parts. Even TNG was a bit rough and cheesy their first season or two.

As for the weapons and such, it's interesting to see them try to get along without all the conveniences of the 24th century. The Enterprise D or E could menace anyone they wanted because they were the biggest fish in the pond. The first Enterprise has to be a lot more cautious, so that changes the focus of the programs. It's almost like watching a new series in that all the trademark things we're used to have gone away: transporters, tricorders, etc.

And Star Wars never fails to amaze me in how they can ruin a perfectly good franchise. I hope #2 is a lot darker and more thoughtful than #1. And I hope that boy band dies a messy, bloody, screaming death in the movie.

What are you boys talking about - Voyager is the BEST STAR TREK series, Janeaway is supurb. Blooming eck, cynical miserable chaps should stick to watching the news or reading Tolkein! These programs are for mass audiences, they introduce us to space anomolies that before could only be understood by great scientists - so the episodes have chirpy endings, and a little campness - hey that's what we need - in this time of destrucion and mindless violence - it tells us humans are going somewhere and it's not doooooom and gloooooom.

Enterprise ROCKS! I have only watched the 2nd episode and it was funny, camp, smart, quirky. The Captain is a rascist chauvanist - SPOT ON! Why would the captain be anything but!!! It's only a relativly short time in the future - and i've been working as a Television Techy person for 7 yrs - and as a female I can tell you, I might be able to run the equipment but in meetings thats irrelevant cause I got Big Boobies!!!

I didn't have a chance to go on the net for a while, so by the time I got to the other thread, it was many pages long, so I didn't bother with it. Mind if we start again here?
I thought the acting on DS9 was very good, and the storylines were even better, illustrating the complicatedness of the real-life situations metaphorized without being bound by them. I once saw a program where some of the TNG actors said that the whole thing was just a laugh for them and, at first, they didn't even think it would last more than a couple of seasons. The friendship and camaraderie is even more evident in the later series, and it means the whole thing rolls better.

What are you talking about? They should bring Shatner back.

I don't know about that. The original series always struck me as being a bit dodgy in various ways. Maybe it's just looking back on it from a time when TV looks so much more attractive. The old series had amateurish-looking sets, unconvincing special effects and fight scenes, second-rate jokes...

If anyone does want to join in the other thread - the link is here. http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/F19585?thread=159813&post=1655049#p1655049 There's a running poll going on, which you might enjoy and can certainly join in, on all aspects Trek-related. Most people over there seem to hate the theme song.

You don't understand, that's what made it so much better than all this sleek professionalism.

Ah, I see what you're getting at now. It's a case of laughing at them, not with them. The bad sets, scripts, plots, etc. are running jokes. I've seen a whole load of programs like that.

No, you still don't get it smiley - smiley
I'm more likely to laugh at the po-faced efforts of Deep Space Nine, or Voyager. It's more to do with 'charm', and TOS had charm in bucketloads.

I suppose it's a matter of taste. I can only see the same, except reversed.

the thing about william shatner

i just dont get the whole kirk thing. with the other characters, in all series including TOS i can have some dgree of connection. chekov for example, not the worlds sexiest man, not the most fleshed out character ever, never really gets the most crucial part etc.....but i can understand him and in an odd sort of a way he can be believable.

kirk just completly escapes me.

mind you, so does coronation street.
