Dragonfly. "A poet can survive everything but a misprint"-- Oscar Wilde Started conversation Nov 25, 2001
I'm very disappointed in the two jazz musicians I asked to interview. Neither have responded, and I need to turn in my interview(five questions) on December 3. Stinky. Can't count on anyone.
So.... HELP!???
I have five questions for a jazz pianist...

I just rang my mate Monk (guess where he gets the name) and asked him the questions. He didn't have time for long answers, sorry.
His answers were:
1) What role does music play in your life?
The way if live life can be summed up by the song "Music and Politics" by Micheal Franti.
2) What is your favorite register to play in?
Accept no borders.
3) Who are pianists that inspire you today-- is, Alicia Keys, Elton John, Billy Joel?
Listening to Jelly Roll Morton still astounds me today, as fresh and as new as the day he laid it down. Modern pianists, you'd be hard to beat Nina Simone or Tom Waits - not as keyboard technichans or musos, but in their interaction, complimentation and inventiveness with vocals and other instrumentations, great great arrangers.
Alicia Keys - lovely voice, great stage presence, but little evidence of crative genius (possibly hampered by marketing).
Elton John - a reasonable talent wasted. His "Elton John" lp, was a great thing.
4) What are some of your favorite pieces and composers?
Bach. The Memphis Jug Band. Charles Mingus. Nick Cave.
5) How does it feel to play for... your family?... an audience?... in ensembles?... and by yourself, practicing?
On my own it is freedom, with others it is friendship, with lots of others it is terrifying.
