Help, i've lost my identity!

Post 1

Hello, i've just suddenly, mid session been booted out of H2G2, and the BBC site doesn't seem to recognise my name and password - what should i do? I can't get back into my old identity or anything?

First wait a bit and see if it works later.

If it still doesn't work, write to [email protected] and specify anything you know about the account (U123456 number, BBC login name/password)

I keeps happening to me too - I'm glad I'm not the only one!! E-mail Abi and she will help you find yourself again.

I use Goo, but suddenly everything went back into Alabaster, and it was as though i had never existed.

BTW I've spoken to the pair of you lots of times before, any idea who i am? This anonymity lark is quite exiting. Odd really, because you don't know who i am anyway!

Well, the excessive use of html tables and the insightfull answer at the 30 mph bridge narrow the list to about 20-30 researchers.

Then the fact that you aren't a regular poster on any of my h2g2 yahoo groups (otherwise I'd recognise your name) narrows it down to about 10-15 researchers.

I still don't know but if I had only one guess I would say youre Hell.

That fact that youre a Goo user doesn't narrow it down at all. As I see it (probably a lot of denial at work here), there are about 3-5 alabaster users among the regular people here, and it is only because of slow connection.

I'm not really here

It sounds like you've lost your cookie. That happened to me, you just need to set it back up again.

smiley - wahsmiley - wah I lost my cookie! It just fell on the ground and is all dirty now. smiley - wahsmiley - wah Mammy get me another one!

I am an Alabaster user. It is not because of a slow connection. I have a very fast connection. On various occasions I have switched to Goo and have only survived about an hour before I have to switch back. The relief!

So does anyone have a spare cookie for me this Halloween? It's all very well being in disguise, but i'm going to need to slip back into my real head soon.

I don't know how you set them back up again, unless you use Opera.
Have you tried clearing your cookies, and logging in again cold?

Jim, you shouldn't need to find your old cookie. When you go to a new machine, all you need is your BBC User Name and your BBC password. These are case-sensitive, so make sure you type them in exactly as you did originally. If these don't work, then your only recourse is to contact the Italics.

And when you have lost your cookie, they can't actually help. Believe me, I've been there. smiley - sadface

Make sure that you're logged in with your original name there.

Do what I did and carefully remember your password and then try and put it in again - Hey presto!! It doesn't work - "They" have changed the password to something totally bizarre.

I had to e-mail Abi several times to finally get back in - and this has happened a few times now!!

I have now regained my cookie, with help from the powers that be. SO i can go back to being my old self again.

Good!

In short, to regain your cookie if you know your login name and password (and they work):

Go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/Login

Enter your login name and password

Check the box that says "always remember me on this computer"

Then log in. h2g2 will deposit a cookie on your browser - assuming your browser lets it, of course. This should preserve your login for all time...

Hah!
