Do they mean it like they mean "nice" and "cute," in that the person they are describing is a perfectly acceptable human being, just one they would never get involved with? Or do they mean they are interested in pursuing a carnal relationship with same? I have not done enough research to establish a baseline rule, and indeed, initial results have been erratic.

The general rule of thumb, I believe, is that it is to be interpreted as follows: "You are a nice, sensitive, caring man whom I deeply appreciate, in that I'm-never-going-to-sleep-with-you kind of way."

However, as behavior differs from person to person, and among women, from moment to moment, there's no point in trying to figure them out. Just do the best you can to get laid, but make sure you're wearing a cup.

Sweet and nice is the general phrase women use when they mean "You are really fun to hang around with, you treat me like a queen however I'm looking for a guy who is going to treat me like dirt and make me cry cause the sparks fly when we get together".

Which is really a shame cause I've discovered that the nice sweet guys can be a tremendous amount of fun in between the sheets. The jerky boys only think of their own amusement whereas the sweet and nice boys ALWAYS put you first! Luckily, there seems to be a growing number of women who have begun to realize this fact. (Heck, I'm doing all I can to spread the word)

I knew they meant "we won't be sleeping together" when they said "nice," but it seems "sweet" can go either way.

Hmmmmmm........ Sweet is usually combined with nice. Usually its "YOU ARE SO SWEET" and that usually is not a good sign unless the girl is extremely virginal. Now if they combined sweet with sexy as in "YOU ARE SO SWEET AND SEXY" then it certainly means they are thinking of you in a carnal way.

Beware the wicked women who call you sweet with an evil gleam in their eye. It means they want to eat your heart for lunch.

Well, hmm, you're right about the virginal qualification, er, that is, at least, in my experience.
I don't mind having my heart eaten out so much, as long as they save a little for dessert.

And evil gleams aren't all that bad, I mean, at least getting ones heart eaten out is physical contact, kinda.

I think it alsp depends what part of the world your in ...
A London 'sweet' is differnt to a New York 'sweet' & so on

Right like this german girl who called me sweet. She was a model and whatnot. Ate my heart out over the course of four days. then went to Australia.

Oh well, sweet in that context is COMPLETELY different. Sweet over here in chicago means something completely different then it does for German models going to Australia. The whole heart eating out thing makes dating seem very dangerous however.

in my experience, it means about the same as nice, but sometimes it means more... the really bad part is that it depends on the girl, the guy, and the situation.

Right, that. Can't be judged on its own. I think everything lies in other cues: was it a lightly casual, "Oh, how sweet" almost as an aside, or was it a direct "you-are-oh-so-very-sweet" comment with a lingering, longing, measuring stare?

And like sea said, it depends on the situation. If it's a casual acquaintence who said something like "You're sweet. It's such a sweet evening. Oh, what a sweet little dog!" then it's likely nothing. But if you've been platonic friends for years and she suddenly starts saying things like "You know, that's very sweet of you," and never has before, then a red flag should have shot up, spat out fireworks, and turned itself inside-out in a dazzling array of notification.

I have to say Dimples sounds like she has the proper definition to nice anyway. That is means a guy that is just perfect for her, who will be a good husband and a loving father. But she prefers a jerk who will beat her and abuse her children.

But I think there´s more hope with sweet being meant in a positive way. If a girl calls you sweet I don´t think you should be worried.

I have to agree with pretty much everything people have written here. So, to recap, "you're sweet" means:
"I want you."
"Let's just be friends."
"I'm going to eat your heart out, but I'm a German model soon to be leaving for Australia, so just enjoy the ride."
"Though up to now we've just been friends, the rocket is now going off."
"Deflower me."

and not all women WANT a jerk, it's just that sometimes they don't REALIZE the guy's a jerk until it's too late. sad but true.

i think that it may be that what she sees as exciting or exotic about someone turns out to be extreme jerk later...

usually when i hear that term... its a pretty good indicator your in the friendship zone...
