Agree with Ottox here - H2G2ers are among the gabbiest people on the planet - always quizzing each other and replying with a quick quip or quiet quote.

SPINY (aka Ship's Cook)

SUIPPORT: a once prosperous fishing town on the east coast of Scotland. Initially a small but lively fishing harbour known as Burzeye, the town was propelled to fame in the 1890s when a Swiss trading vessel carrying gentlemen's wristwatches was wrecked in a storm near the harbour entrance. Newspaper reports of the time alluded to the captain's failing to wind the ship's chronometer and thus failing to calculate longitude accurately. "In fog the town looked just like Lucerne" he said at his trial.

Hearing of the spilt cargo, the fishermen of Burzeye immediately set sail to recover the watches from the relatively shallow waters. For many years thereafter, it was well known that if a gentleman desired a wristwatch, they were to be had at remarkable prices in the taverns of Burzeye and surrounding area, and because of the country of origin of the watches, the town becane known as Swissport. In the local dialect, this became Suipport, and in response to a campaign to attract business to the area, the local Council passed a motion to rename the town in 1913.

Although prosperous through two world wars, the town was hit hard by the emergence of the digital watch in the 1970's, and is now mostly known for its appearance in a grittily realistic Ken Loach film about two unemployed families.
