I've tried to cover all the variations at the bottom, including this one. Maybe it's a more popular way than I originally thought - anyone up for a vote??

As with some patience games I think it works best if the next player can lay more cards claiming them to be of the same value or one up or down.
That's my preference anyway.

Surely if you can lay any cards anyway, there's no need to cheat? The fun comes when all you've got is 3 kings, and everyone knows all you've got is 3 kings, and the person next to you puts a 5 down...

Indeed. I agree with that one - anything that makes it easier (ie: you can put one less, the same or one above) takes away that smug feeling of knawing exactly what the other player is holding and that they definitely can't play.

We had a bought version (complete with a board) called Fool (I think). Instead of numbers it was family members - baby, sister, brother, mum, dad, grandma, grandad...and there were 4 old aunt marge(I think that was her name) cards. It was played the same way in that you had to take turns to lay 1 or 2 cards on each place on the board moving upwards to grandad and then starting again.
Was a real family favourite...used to get dragged out every christmas/school holiday. We've still got it somewhere although it's falling to bits.

I suppose Aunt Marge cards were not ever legal to play so if you had them in your hand you *had* to cheat to get rid of them... interesting addition to the game - which reminds me of *another* card game called "Contraband" I think , which had various items on cards which you had to 'declare' and pay tax on, but there was one card 'The Ruritanian Crown Jewels' which you couldn't declare and had to 'smuggle'. It was so long ago I played it that I can't recall the exact rules, but I suppose it was like Cheat. ramble...ramble

yes it was called Contraband > http://www.kiddstoys.co.uk/cband.htm
With each play I think you declared the value of the face down cards you'd played, and if another player doubted you and challenged the declaration and you were found to be cheating you had to pay the fine - exactly what happened to the cards played I still can't recall or how one gained money to pay duty.
How this game was played is going to bug me now

erm isnt that the card game "cheat"?
It does work with two players but they have to be human dont they?
How did you get the title because you just shoot into how to play a game........
Perhaps you need to specify this is a card game and not something to do with the countrys.

I'm not sure what you mean, there - the title includes the words "the card game" after the two words that are the popular names for it on either side of the atlantic - what would you suggest I wroite for a title??

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.
If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.
Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!

Hi Dinnerlady,
I've been given your fine entry to subedit, and the nearly finished version is available at A2116487. If you spot something that needs attention, please drop me a note.
One thing I've stumbled over ist the link to Liar's Poker, which currently isn't working. It has to go out if nothing happens. Could you give me a short explanation (one sentence) on liar's poker that I could fill in instead, just like the explanation for Spoof for example?
Thanks
