On the teletext news pages this morning, harrods and selfridges are opening their Christmas departments up this Thursday(28th July) because shoppers ?? are starting Christmas shopping early ??
does that mean Easter eggs will be out in the middle of August ? and Nov' 5th moved to Sept' 5th ??

But seriously, there must be a market for them to bother. If nobody bought anything at that time of year, they would soon learn to keep it for later in the year.

Last year I saw Christmas decorations for sale in early August, and Easter eggs were available on New Year's Eve. The calendar is no more than a serving suggestion these days, apparently.

Worst of all was when they started putting school things at the end of June. Yes, right as the holidays started.

is it a case of shoppers asking retailers where the christmas stuff is, or retailers thinking, "I know, kids are on holidays, let's flood the stores with christmas stuff and rely on pester power to flog lots of shoddy goods that'll be broken or out of date well before the big day, so they'll all have to come and buy it all again. Nya ha ha ha ha!!!", while twiddling their waxed moustaches and twirling their villain-y capes all the way to the bank.

I suspect the latter.
