I had one friend who had been trying to get me to read the series for a while, but didn't push too hard. I got to college and in my second year met someone who had a habit of quoting the book. He had just bought the complete series and was in my room insisting that I must read it and that there should never be a time when someone wasn't reading the book. After taking the book from him and kicking him out so I could sleep, I started reading it...and got sucked in.
