I don't communicate with you anymore FKF as I made abundantly clear in the past to do with you out of the blue bringing up that Lord Wolfden thread for your own motives and reasons..and stirring up no end of trouble.
I've made it clear in my posts that's whats needed is full on honesty about things.
I have full confidence in Dr. Zen.
He has NEVER ducked a question from me.
This thread is allowing for stuff to come out and people to be honest about anxieties etc. That's a very healthy sign to me .
It'll take time and lots of people giving opinions and being open.
That IS happening.

Oh, and this might not be the right place to point it out, but if I'm right, I seem to have discovered a _massive_ problem...
At some stage it appears someone did something with the announcements page... None of the old bbc announcements are there...
My assumption is that someone thought it would be a good idea to create a new announcements page...
Now, that's all well and good... But for someone like me who's been subscribed to the page for years, I've only just noticed the change and it appears that I must still be subscribed to the 'old' version (whereever that is), because I haven't been getting notifications of any of the new announcements...
Ooops guys!
This one you should be screaming from the rooftops - anyone who _was_ subscribed to announcements is no longer!

Ok guys, I will tell you something in all honesty now. And I know it is not professional and I say it as a Researcher and it is not an official satement but: after reading this thread I'm actually crying now.

yeah well I've cried on and off a few times about h2g2 of late.
That's because we *care*.

Whisky, if you go to <./>Announcements</.> you will get the current announcements page. You can subscribe to that. There's been a message at the top of the Front Page telling you this for the last couple of weeks.
The BBC announcements are now at <./>Announcements-Old</.>.

Hi Whisky
May I just point you to the link from the top of the Front Page, to the new <./>Announcements</.>

For those of you are unsure who's running h2g2 now, this is it as I see it. I'm sure Dr Z could give you a better description.
h2g2 is owned by Not Panicking Ltd, also known as NPL.
NPL has three members:
1. Robbie Stamp, who was the original chief executive of the company that set up h2g2 in the first place. He also produced the movie of Hitchhiker's Guide.
2. Noesis - a company who run chat sites. They're providing the servers that the site is running on, and a lot of moderation expertise.
3. Us, the h2g2 Community, led by Dr Z and with many, many other volunteers assisting him.

And Whisky, the old announcements page which you are subscribed to also has a link to the current announcements page.

Whisky Posted Dec 6, 2011
Wonderful guys - but the question is, how many people have seen links to the announcements page and assumed their already subscribed, because they've been getting the announcements for years already???
Yes - you're linking to the new announcements page from the front page, but has anyone actually pointed out that existing subscriptions are no longer valid?

>>>And Whisky, the old announcements page which you are subscribed to also has a link to the current announcements page.
Arrrghhh! Can't someone stop making excuses, just say "OOOOPS!" and start putting notifications all over the place that existing subscriptions to announcements are no longer valid!
This is not a personal attack on you guys - I've just pointed out a potential flaw, and instead of doing something about it you're all getting defensive about it...
------
There are going to be a lot of people out there who don't directly visit the announcement page....
They assume that because they're subscribed to the page that they'll get announcements in their "my conversations" section... As they have done for years... When they get these announcements they'll click on them and comment/ignore/argue/post smileys/blame 2legs...
But if they're no longer getting those notifications they'll assume there's no new news...

This defensivness is a real problem Gnomon because it is across the board, it doesn't matter how politely, thoughtfully people discuss community issues/matters, it is greeted with defensiveness
It seems to me that there is a prevailing view that anyone who questions, or raises concerns, or disagrees with decisions that have been made is seen as attacking or undermining volunteers, the effort that has gone into making this place work, or attacking and undermineing noohootoo.

Whisky, in all fairness, right from the onset of the need to leave the BBC and find another home, there were literally dozens of threads to advise what was happening. And at every step, someone trying to collate them into a single place to find follow-ups.
In real time, they could only offer advice and information to folks that were around through the many months of planning, strategizing, agonizing, etc.
Since the new home was achieved, perhaps the Front Page could have used huge, blinking and glowing lights (and ACE welcomes) to direct everyone to a history and break-down of what is now the reality. Or, they could have continued to work their arses off in the back rooms.
In the end, some will have missed cues and clues, for which the current teams are probably apologetic for. But in the old vernicular ... cr@p happens. You have links to follow NOW, at your request.

Just to say thanks to Gnomon for posting here - and for posting to the old announcements page that we were moving to the new one.
I'm awfully busy with my day job today - so I can't be around to answer any direct questions.
That doesn't mean that I'm not lurking and reading.

Thanks Gnomon - I can live with that And thanks for the announcement on the old page.

Gnomon described some of the background stuff fairly well in a journal recently ( F54784?thread=8286595 ) , and Mrs Zen has one running of what she has done for the site today. Just samplings of the 'behind-doors' stuff that goes on day after day, voluntarily

Yes thank you Gnomon.
Like Dr. Zen you are incredibly straightforward, clear and honest...
Just what the doctor ordered for me
Seriously man, thank you.
