Before you sign, you must swear the following:
1. That Nethack (and its derivatives) is the greatest game ever made.
2. That you occasionally forget you are not playing the game in real life, and occasionally expect to run into kobold zombies in the street, or to put on a new coat only to discover it is cursed and you can't take it off.
3. That you think dogs would look so much better if they were represented by a lower-case "d" in real life.
4. That you don't mind the pain of the Rogues' Guild Branding Iron (tm)

If you're sure about all of the above, then sign your name along with (optionally) your preferred character-class and race in this thread.

Pete, never to have a time-specific nick again (Keeper of Disambiguating Semicolons) - Born in the Year of the Lab Rat

Needless to say... Hit me with that @-shaped brand!

No. 2 happens to me a lot in other RPGs, but only occasionally in real life smiley - yikes

Is that Mine Town? I don't remember seeing that particular variety before.

Welcome to the Guild, Pete (the pain usually starts to die down after about ten weeks)!

Ach! You caught me out. I actually stole the level from a town in Slash'EM, but even they usually only have the room with the stairs in and the big town room - this one was a bit of an anomaly. I also tweaked it a bit (added the room with the guarded gold - supposedly the Guild itself smiley - winkeye)

Hello misha! Welcome to the rogues' guild! smiley - thief

Are you a Nethack player, then? I don't see anything about it on your personal space (but that doesn't mean you don't play it - I don't have anything about it either smiley - biggrin).

What is your favourite character-class, and your top score? Mine's a lowly 19000-ish, but Pete's made 300,000+ before!

Nice to see you!

smiley - thief Welcome, oh S'pe;lug:x! Don't worry too much about the @ ... the pain will subside!

I take it you're a pretty experienced NetHacker (what with having a favourite spell and all) ... we could do with a few of them, cos I certainly am not one (I keep dying in the big open room full of monsters that appears about level 13, and I have a pitiful top score of less than 20000) ... Pete's a bit (well, a lot) better than me, however. smiley - biggrin

'The big open room' officially known as 'The Big Room' is the gazetteers (yes I read spoiliers, shoot me. I also read the source). And comes in several varieties. Although I have got a char to the astral plain, he's currently in limbo as he's about to be killed, several times.

I tend to have very few characters, take notes (using the ID spoiler) and die around the Quest, at least with valkyries. Not IN the Quest - the Valkyrie quest is too easy smiley - zzz

I've not played any other class much. Though I like monks and rogues, they're fun (if hard).

I seem to only play with monks, because I can't get any other class (except valks perhaps) down past about Dungeonlevel 7 or so (yes, I'm that rubbish at the game). I've bookmarked YANS now, and I'm working my way through some of the spoilers that are appropriate to me.

Help yourself to some lembas and a couple of potions of booze on the house!

I'm so glad there's another Monk here! I was starting to get a bit intimidated with all the Rogues and Valkyries... smiley - biggrin

Hello, I've got a nice advert on my homepage for Nethack and have managed to ascend twice (first time with a tourist!) so I think it would be rude *not* to have a brand smiley - smiley

I've even named myself after Nethack. smiley - winkeye

I've already dealt out quite a few pieces of info onsite. I don't know everything though and I don't know Slash'em at all - I once downloaded it but prefer Nethack.

Bagpuss has an article somewhere that I once tried to persuade him to submit to Peer Review but he would have none of it. There's a few threads there and some dangling off my homepage if anyone wants a sneaky look. smiley - smiley

Post 19

OwlofDoom

Yeah, I saw Bagpuss's article and considered writing my own as he didn't want to put his in for PR... perhaps someone could convince him to join the Guild and then we could collaborate on one...

I prefer Nethack to Slash'EM as well, if only because it is better documented (I realised that everyone else read the spoilers, and that they don't really spoil anything - what with the game being random - except perhaps being able to save lots of money on major Oracle consultations) and I can have more fun when I know what things do.

Slash'EM is great fun for a change, even if it's just for the #technique command!
