h2g2 guidelines rant
Ameuc Posted Aug 9, 2003
I followed the threads (and the ‘threats’) - been reading for the past couple of hours and I have never laughed so much.
Ok, so the issue of what constitutes breaking the guidelines is not new, (never thought it would be) and users asking for definition certainly comes to the fore in whole of these linked discussions.
I have to admit that I could care less about which entry gets deleted and which stays because, if the writer seriously wants publication, s/he will follow through other publishing sources, so it is irrelevant to get p***** off just because the piece wasn’t accepted here – there are so many web sites, so many magazines to choose from, does it matter that a users forum won’t publish it?
One of my poems received a warning because content is a little graphic – I was surprised, but that’s all.
Mind you I am always surprised when it comes to either receiving notice of my stuff getting published or rejected, and sometimes I get angry when one publisher tells me my work is too modern and another that it’s too traditional – about the same pieces, waste of energy. I’m not going to change these people’s opinions and my work isn’t going to change the world in any fundamental way, so it is not important.
I dunno but I think the article re the Web Cam also falls into that category – it’s not exactly earth shattering news is it?
So regardless of whether the guidelines are acceptable as they are or need amending, this site is primarily a ‘fan’ site, managed by the people for the people and nothing should get in the way of the idea that ultimately this includes families with children – although I would guess there is a lot of content in the site already which would not be suitable for the pre-teen anyways, including poetry.
Some of my work may be considered too graphic for this site so I don’t put it in even though it would be cool to get some feedback on issues important to me, however saying that, I’m not about to argue that whatever I write is the only justification for inclusion in any publication, and to demand the powers that be explain, exactly, what modifications need to be done before a ‘party’ piece gets accepted is a waste of time.
No I say recycle it all, wrap em round your Friday fish and chips and be thankful that it’s all being put to some good use – no matter be it Shakespeare, Dante or A Me

"I followed the threads (and the ‘threats’)"
You won't have been able to see many of the threats since those were made in "private" emails to various people (along with the lies claimed to justify those threats).

I really enjoy it whenever I see a sentence taken out of context which usually ends up giving it an entirely different meaning.
Sef, my response about the use of the word ‘threats’ as found on the link posted by xyroth, is the play on words, ‘thread’ – ‘threat’ Freudian slip which had already been made before.
If users had sent threats, I would generally assume the matter had been dealt with efficiently and appropriately by the recipients, taking on board the nature of the threats, whether or not the threats were made anonymously and so forth.

Mine was in that context too - you just missed it. You also got the direction wrong because of that. The staff were threatening the researchers, not the other way round.
