A Conversation for Talking Point: How Did You Discover the HHGTTG?

When I was at University two of my friends were in a car accident, one of them in a coma. I was told reading to him would help him as the sound of a friendly voice would get through.
I had brought a breathtakingly boring book (which was later made into a breathtakingly boring movie). After reading a bit I suggested he should wake up so I wouldn't have to continue reading. It was worth a try anyway.
One day, just as I was about to open this sedative of a novel I noticed the Hitchhikers Guide on the table by his bed and started reading it instead. On the way home I stopped by a bookstore and bought the rest of the series. After that bought anything I could find with DNA's name on it, a habit which continued right up to the Salmon of Doubt.
