Gnomon - time to move on

Entry: Wikipedia - A904051
Author: Gnomon - U151503

This entry is about the online encyclopaedia, Wikipedia. There is a good article about h2g2 in Wikipedia, so we should repay the compliment with an entry about them.

Sounds like chaos to me, but I'm an old time mainframe man, so it would really.

Good article Gnomon, I'd never heard of this - so how do I get to have a look at it ?

Very interesting - I must get round to checking Wikipedia out when I have time. (Is it referred to as 'Wikipedia' or 'THE Wikipedia'?)

I'm a bit rushed at the moment so I've only read the entry quickly rather than thoroughly, but that quick read revealed nothing negative to comment on - well done!

excellent article.

Wikipedia is not my cup of tea - too dry and techie looking, but the idea behind is interesting.

Nice one! Fun article. I like Wikis. We used to have one at work but we don't use it any more.smiley - sadface For some reason people want to use tools that are more complicated and less democratic.smiley - erm

You obviously recognised the Australasian flavour of the term "wiki".

FTP = File Transfer Protocal. (that really isn't the right sp of protocal!)
Bit like HTTP (Hyper test transfer protocal), it's a location on the net from which to download files...

FTP=File Transfer Protocol, it allows files to be uploaded and downloaded from and to servers. Maybe a footnote could be useful?

I like the entry, i can't think of anything that needs changing. I really should look into Wikipedia, i had a quick look and, to be honest, didn't like the feeling of being a newbie again! smiley - blush

It allows you to transfer files from one machine to another (stands for File Tranfer Protocol). It is not entirely dissimilar to HTTP (stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol).

When you go to http://www.wikipedia.com (or whatever the address is), what actually happens is that your browser requests a file from the wikipedia server. When you receive this file you are allowed to modify it (add your own text) and send it back to the server, where it becomes part of the site.

A picture, however, is a seperate file. Presumably its sitting on your hard drive, so if you want to add it to the wikipedia, you need a way of sending it to the wikipedia server. That's what you use the FTP program for.

Zarquon's Singing Fish!

No need for me to be embarrassed. I'd never heard of the term, so yes, maybe a footnote would be in order!
