...but I want to sign up anyway!
I used to think that I knew more math than the average joe bloggs (Sorry Joe). Then I come here and read what some of you peeps are talking about! Sheesh... I know nothing... but am willing to learn!
a = 1
a = x
ax = x^2
ax-a^2 = x^2-a^2
a(x-a) = (x-a)(x+a)
a = (x+a)
1 = 2
Aint algebra brilliant!
Wibble.

Although in line 6 you divided by zero *shudder*..... Good to have some more people! Mathmos will live forever!
(can anyone tell I've been getting flack from the musicians lately?)

Flack ?
Division by zero is a method that was widely used by so many people for a couple of centuries to prove Fermat's theorem, so it can't be that bad .

Ok, how about this one, heh heh
We all know Euler's Equation:
e^(pi*i) = -1
Square both sides, and:
e^(2pi*i) = 1
But, of course:
e^0 = 1
So,
e^(2pi*i) = e^0
Taking the natural log of both sides:
2pi*i = 0
And dividing by 2pi*i, just to add insult to injury:
1 = 0

That example of algebra was demonstrated to me by my A level Maths teacher, some *ahem* years ago, in my first week of studying and it has stuck with me ever since. No wonder I failed
Still, managed to earn more by getting into computers instead!!! Wouldn't catch one of them doing any dodgy maths like dividing by zero or having problems with floating point calculat... Oh hang on...

Lesbegue integration = funky generalisation of Riemann.
Give me a couple more weeks and I might go so far as to say that I enjoy it...

Riemann??
Just to make things clear... I really did *fail* A level maths
Originally I thought it was 'cause I'd messed around too much at school Now I think it was more like I wasn't clever enough
Still... I'm hoping that I can teach an old dog new tricks, and am using the BBC AS Guru Maths website to learn Maths all over again!. (Eventually want to go back & redo A level!)
Joined this lot 'cause I'm interested in maths, not 'cause I'm any good at it! .
At least I know what Integration is!!!

Methinks you got the "s" in the wrong place (it's Lebesgue). They have organized celebrations (including an anniversary cake, promise) for 100 years Lebesgue measure .
Lebesgue integral is fine once you see that 1. in practise, you do all the calculations just the same was as Riemann and 2. you can swap all trendy symbols (like limit or integral) the way you feel like, everything just works fine anyhow .

Ha. I knew the word looked wrong the way I was typing it.
Yea, Lebesgue is cool, actually. It's spawned a new phrase amongst my mates for something that doesn't matter - "it's a null set". Celebrating 100 years of Lebesgue measure? Hrm

That involves dividing by zero--which screws everything up.
Since if a = x then a - x = 0

What's Euler's equation about?
I know i proberly stands for sqrt(-1) but what's e mean?

Also, please tell why the equations flawed. I don't think I can live in a world where 1=0
