"I think that my vote is a good as yours"

Nothing personal, but there's certainly something there. J.S. Mill might have covered it a century or so ago 'On Liberty'.

Perhaps votes proportional to IQ^2 or something like that? Average man atop the Clapham omnibus gets 1 vote. Genius gets 2.25 votes.

should be fun...

reminds me of coluche, a stand up comedian in my country, he was taking the p++s out of the racists and xenophobes etc by repeating their comments in a stupid way... the irony was that his victims didn't see the joke and were his main fans...smiley - boing

"i don't think that women should:
...drive [they don't have the same natural ability than men when it comes to driving]
...work [especially if they have kids... they should stay home looking after them]
...vote [they only vote for the candidate who dress the best and they don't have a clue about politics]"

(i definitely don't agree with these opinions either BTW...smiley - biggrin
i'm sure we will find a few more "gems"... i'm thinking of another one at the mo' but i'm not sure how to phrase it. it was a suggestion made by a chingford [london] councillor if i remember well: his idea was to re-open workhouses [not sure if it's the right name] like in the victorian times... if you don't know what i'm talking about i will try to find out more about it...)

one that i can't resist mentioning for personal reasons:

"i think that punch and judy is a perfect example of the british culture/tradition and should stay untouched..."

[believe me or not some people still think it's a great example for kids to watch a wife beater/murderer etc (punch) getting away with it... and of course they see it as part of the grand british tradition even so the origins of the show have nothing to do with the UK... there is an entry about punch and judy if you want to link it to yours... i can even look for the A number if you want... no problem...]

mmmmm... that should do for today...smiley - biggrin

it's fine... i only hope that the "punch and judy" supporter i know won't think i've finally come to my "senses" and now agree with what he said...smiley - whistlesmiley - biggrinsmiley - laugh

should be more "gems" coming soon... i'll try to remember some of the err "arguments" that were used by my opponents in some "debates" in the LD library...

I think that teachers have got it easy, working 9 'til 4 with all those long holidays.

I think that the coalminers and shipbuilders did themselves out of their jobs by demanding such high wages.

I think it's a disgrace that we import so much stuff from overseas, just because it's cheaper to produce over there.

I think that Africa's only a mess because we're not in charge anymore. I bet if you asked one of them, they'd say things were better when the white men were in charge.

one "gem" that i've seen printed in a "newspaper" a few years ago...
[without the 'i think' obviously]

"i think that the rise in abortions is due to contraceptives having been made so easily accessible for teenagers..."

the wording might need some re-working there as i quoted from memory...
and i've still haven't found the logic behing this statement either...

"i think that if god had wanted mankind to fly he would have given us wings..."

a bit of an old one i know... smiley - sorry

will try to do better in my next posting...smiley - whistlesmiley - biggrin

oh about the queen doing a job... what about "i think the queen is working very hard" or something around it?!... just a thought...

regarding wages:
"i think that the legal minimum wages will cause more unemployment"

[we might get some money from some bosses for this one...smiley - biggrinsmiley - laugh]

I think that to control the ever expanding north south divide the London living allowance should be provided as a means tested benefit rather than an increase in wages.

OK yooz guys (Dr Trout, Silverwolf, Ancient Brit), there's a badge at A901414.
You're on the editor list, so (if you want to) you can copy the GuideML, paste it into your Space and so create a clickable link to the (now slightly modified) Entry.
All 3 of you can also edit the Entry too.
Sorry about the colour, but - hey - you can change that too, if you like.
I'll get round to a GuideML version of the Entry soon. Honest...

I think that the rise in abortions is due to contraceptives having been made so easily accessible for teenagers. <- surely the notion of 'contra ' (against) 'ception' (or conception of children) should provide a hint as to why this is wrong. If there's readily available contraception, why does that mean that there should be more unwanted children (a horrible phrase).. smiley - silly

hi njan...smiley - smiley

i remember that i was puzzled when i heard the comment at the time [even worse, it was repeated from a newspaper as far as i remember...smiley - biggrin]... it is definitely a wrong comment as logically more contraception would = less abortions... but i think it was used at the time by people who wanted to blame everything on what they were seeing as a permissive society...

[i'm glad i said that i didn't agree with the comment when i posted it...smiley - biggrin or i _hope_ i did...]

i've got a few more comments like that to post later on... eventually [which i don't agree with either BTW...smiley - smiley]... but, yep, this one must be the worst...smiley - biggrin

On the whole, I tend to get so infuriated with such comments that I find it better to stay out of the way of situations in which I can hear them.

One of the worst I've ever heard was when sitting in line when I was giving blood - the man next to me, making polite conversation, said something along the lines of; "You know, I've been giving blood for 20 years, and I've not seen one ethnic minority giving blood. What does that tell you about them". smiley - grrsmiley - steamsmiley - yuk

I honestly could have killed the guy. I'm so glad I bit my tongue..

Post 19

i can relate to that...smiley - smiley

when i was involved with the local federation of tenants association, there was one guy who used to come out with this kind of comments... one of his favourites [and overused ones] was something like: " 'they' only join because 'they' want something" or something similar anyway... but the thing is/was _that's_ the point of joining tenants associations; getting better services from the landlord [in this case the local authority]...
but... err... that's another story...smiley - biggrin

but, yep... lots of comments are being made in public that shouldn't be made... because these comments can [on top of feeding some urban myths] hurt people who happen to be in the vicinity [these comments are not always made in a discreet manner]...

Hi njan (and Silverwolf!)
Thanx for your thoughts. We don't actually believe this stuff, y'know.
Whereas you avoid reading these opinions, I find catharsis in posting them. Each to his own.
The eternal contradiction of life is that the people I know and love have these opinions. They work hard, live simply, are bemused by my pretensions. They're the stock I come from; I'm one of them. I don't fit in any other community, certainly not one of beautiful, cerebral people with refined ideas.
I wouldn't feel bad about this, except for the nagging suspicion that my own kind are holding back humanity.
The guy next door (shhh...don't tell him I said this) is basically Hitler without the opportunity. I guess the quotes will keep coming.

(Hey, and Silverwolf, I promise to take those nasty comments about France off my Space very soon! You might like to hear that I got into a big argument in a restaurant the other day, by saying that you can generally get better roast beef in French restaurants than English ones, and that this had nothing to do with BSE, rather something to do with culinary culture. I'd have thought that would be accepted by most people, but obviously not. Therefore I have a new candidate quote, which is :
"The English care about food at least as much as the French".
I need your opinion before I post it, but I think this is probably the most outrageous remark so far...)
