Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.

If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.

Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!

Einstein was a wonderful role model for scientists; he was open to the unexpected, and Darwin was also (he got his son to play the bassoon to growing plants, and measured for any effects).

I can form an opinion of how dowsing, and pendulum divining, and angel interrogation, might work: the person asking the question receives very faint hints from the environment or their brain, and uses a flexible and responsive apparatus to show up his/her own movements which give the answer. The pendulum or rod is an amplifier of tiny ("involuntary") movements.

If the results backed it up, I would have no trouble with this.

Einstein was also famously sceptical about quantum mechanics; he expressed his doubt is the phrase "God doesn't play dice with the universe". But weird or not, it produces measurable results.

OK, well I'll give you a clue. There was an EG entry on feng shui some time ago: A1038700. I think that feng shui is a load of cobblers. Yet *I* recommended this entry for inclusion. Now, why dod you think I did that? (It's nothing personal, by the way).

well thats quite simple its because you dont believe in it, and to be honest i think if some one actually stood in front of you and proved dowsing worked you still would be sceptical.
im not saying thats wrong i can understand it, after all to be honest i did'nt believe in it or could i see how it could work, until i tried it and was amazed at the results i got.
btw its ok i know its nothing personal.

But I don't believe in feng shui either, do I? So what was the difference?

Let's see . . . it is couched in terms of "it is believed" and has a link to "a skeptical view". Hmmm, that's the US spelling of sceptical, must alert the Towers smiley - run

I trust that the sub who gets this entry is diligent in following up the numerous calls for balance and objectivity from sceptics.

While some corrections have been made, unreferenced assertions still exist - particularly contentious toward the end of the entry (eg minefield clearance and submarine location success).

Part of the history of dowsing should certainly be the conspicuous lack of success in scientifically demonstrating that it is more effective than chance guesswork.

the following are what i recently received by email so i will be looking into this further. but if i cant get any more info on this subject i will be asking for this particular part to be either reworded or deleted.

I think they used dowsing more for locating the extensive VC tunnels. This was very successful.

I had also heard that our U.S. troops were trained in dowsing for land mine removal as well as tunnel location.

No. If you ever want to know just search for the recommended entry in the search field - you'll find this entryt and one with a different number with status 'recommended' - A3373175 The History of Dowsing - clicking on this shows the italic Paully listed as editor, but I am aware that he will only be holding the entry until it gets assigned to a sub, so it will change.
