Ring in the New!

Bell ringer.

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,

The flying cloud, the frosty light;

The year is dying in the night;

Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Do you feel like that? Ready to let the past go? Ready for what comes next? Not surprising. When gathering the factoids for this week's end-of-year quiz, I noticed something: some very discouraging things happened this year. It makes your heart hurt to think what a lot of us, and our fellow humans on this planet, have been through in the last 365 turns of the Earth. And it makes us angry to think about how hard some of these problems are going to be to fix – if, indeed, they can be fixed. There's a lot of sadness and suffering out there.

Do you see rays of light where you are? Has something good happened to you in the last twelvemonth? Don't feel guilty, rejoice – and let your good fortune spur you on to share with others. One of the things you can do is to share your insight, knowledge, and effort in the labour of love that is h2g2. In the coming year, we hope to hear from more and more of you, as you bring your art, photography, knowledge, and know-how to enrich this worldwide community's outreach. Ring out those bells, to the wild sky.

This week's issue brings many old friends together. Bluebottle has the crossword answers, Willem's given us not only a beautiful owl, but a charming poem, Tav's got crafts, and Rod reminds us of the value of books. Galaxy Babe keeps us looking at the stars, Awix at the silver screen, and Ben inside our souls. As always, we invite you to look up, back, around, and then to write with us.

Enjoy your week. Take care if you're out at the pub, and wrap up warmly. Remember to check Create's new challenge on New Year's Day: we think it will motivate you to new flights of originality. Happy New Year, all!
