I agree. I don't think it was abused in this case, but it shouldn't happen again.

How "late" can January 2 be? There are 362 days left in the year, after all. It wasn't until Orcus posted a link to the main page that I knew there was one. Hence my post about being Rosencrantz or Gildenstern in a play where only Hamlet matters.

Lists have always been made in secret for this reason.
If you'd not posted that you were looking at the other lists to try and be unique then I'd have had no problems with this being a late entry.
Instead, however, I think I call for disqualification.

Nay! Nay! paulh hails from Boston and one must remember
it was this city that banned the Everly Bros for the riske
lyrics to "Wake Up Little Suzie".
Shirley this fact plus the foot-and-a-half of snow they got
over the past week should ameliorate any residual grudges
some might still bear over that little Tea Party incident back
in the 1770s. Forgive and forget, eh.
Or, to prove my coniving abilities, resubmit his list - which
I have not seen - as mine and let him play on as me.
I have seen none of the lists and was as surprised as anyone
that an Everly Brother had passed. Their version of Lucille is
immortal.

Still has that sweet mix of youthful energy and angst.

My apologies. I have FBS [frozen brain Syndrome]. If you took a vote and disqualified me, I would withdraw my submission.
But I think all the names on my list are in good health. There's a *reason* why no one else had them listed.

I thought that as Paulh had already looked at the lists when he came across game, and then made sure that he picked other people so as to not copy the lists, if you see what I mean
anyway I didn't think he was doing it for the points

"It is not like a wish list or anything, " - I have taken the opinion, after I was sadly awarded points for Tony Hart a few years back, that all the ones on my list would be either people who were "not very nice" or those I was neutral about.

I've just been looking back. Have we really been doing this since 2006?
For 2007 Mu Beta set out some rules which included:
"Rule 1) All entries must be submitted by the end of Saturday 20th January. No deaths before that date will be counted towards your scores.
.
.
Rule 4 - addendum ii) Gamesmanship in the shape of waiting until the entry deadline and posting a completely unique list will be strictly frowned upon. This is supposed to be fun, dammit!"

Orcus Posted Jan 4, 2014
Ach, the game is so difficult that personally I wouldn't worry. If someone wins through such 'gamesmanship' they shall be punished with virtual frowning and general disapproval.

Was that in the rules? I don't remember seeing it.

How about my submitting a different list, then, with few or no unique entries?

Mol - on the new tablet Posted Jan 5, 2014
But then that might make somebody else's unique entries not unique any more, which means fewer points for them.
I wish I'd put English Cricket on my list ...

Rather than limit the unique picks, why not limit unique bonuses? Award the 15 points a maximum of 3 times, say; or don't include it in multipliers - just add 5 points - that sort of thing?
Deathlist 2014 - the official thread
Peanut Posted Jan 5, 2014
I think that sounds a fair solution Icy
Perhaps no bonus points for unique picks and no tutting if Paul wins
Deathlist 2014 - the official thread
coelacanth Posted Jan 5, 2014
There's no need to change anything about scores, unique bonuses etc. Just make sure all lists are submitted in secret by a deadline, and stick to it.

Peanut Posted Jan 5, 2014
Except that this year there seemed to be some confusion for new players about how to hand the lists in.
Re Icy suggestion, I meant that Paul doesn't get unique bonus points, if that seems fair to the other players and is less harsh than a disqualification for Paul.
My list would have been late by 2007 rules but I thought the deadline was 31st Dec.

Icy North Posted Jan 5, 2014
Oh, but Coelacanth is right. I wasn't looking for a solution for late players. That's a bigger problem, as their picks can result in the existing players unique picks being made non-unique.
I guess the best solution for late players would be to have a 'late section' - entries which are held separate from the main game, which they can score on a 'for fun' basis, without bonuses and without affecting the uniqueness of picks in the main game.
