Flattened grass

Why do farmers and groundsmen use rollers on grass? Is it based upon the erroneous belief, based on grass appearing greener, where trampled down (the canopy effect of tall trees cutting out light and therefore growth at lower levels) so when cut, the area appears more barren, than stunted grass, squashed under foot?

Hi

Rolling is supposed to firm the top inch or two of ground. I personally don;t see the point in doing this to a normal lawn. Compaction is bad for the roots, as it squeezes out the spaces where air can get in. RFoots need air.

In special circumstances it might serve a purpose. If you were playing tennis on a grass court, you might want the grass rolled.
