This was really cool. You were lucky to have such a kind father. There are some men that insist on keeping their toys to themselves and shout at their kids if they touch their sets!

Deek

That is a lovely story.

My father ‘made’ me a train set for one Christmas. He had bought a ‘previously owned’ set of engines, coaches and track in the September and spent months refurbishing it beautifully while hidden in our attic. I don’t know what the scale was but it was quite massive. The engine itself was about a foot long and the track when fully laid out circled the room. It was all electric and it all came in a large wooden box about three or four feet long.

It ended up as a permanent feature in the attic room and had years of use until the transformer eventually gave up the ghost.

Florida Sailor All is well with the world

Thank you all for your kind comments.

As great as the train layout was, it was the unique way in which it was given that left the lasting impression. As Deke said, all good things come to an end, it is the fond memory that is most important.

I suppose my main reason for sharing this story is the hope that someone reading it will be inspired to find a unique way of presenting a gift to someone they love, and maybe create a memory that will survive the next half-century.smiley - biggrin

Gingersnapper+Keeper of the Cookie Jar and Stuff and Nonsense

Love your story. At our house my husband loved HO scale. He had a small layout. But he and our son and daughter each year would make a layout with many trips to Viv's Hobby Shop for stuff. All those little boxes with parts to be put together. Then before Christmas they would put an add in the paper and sell it. I never asked if they were sad to sell it. ? . I will ask. That was money then for the next layout. . . smiley - bubbly . .. ...
