Amazing Facts from the Edited Guide: Answers

  1. Where do you find Saturna Island?
Canada. Read about life on this British Columbian island here, thanks to echomikeromeo.
  2. What is a 'Flying Fortress'?
A World War II bomber. Read all about the B-17 in Farlander's Guide Entry. Also check out this song popular with aircrew. (Warning: it's rather rude.)
  3. In 2005, an employee of the North Kesteven District Council was found to have embezzled an astounding £5,000-£10,000 a month from her employers, for about ten years. What was she using the money for?
Her collection of Elvis memorabilia.   Galaxy Babe and pailaway collaborated on this Entry, which has many more fascinating Elvis factoids. The moral? Worship within your means.
  4. How do you get more crinkles in your Mandelbrot set?
Use more iterations.   This Entry from frleon will explain everything. The pictures are fab, too.
  5. Where would you find 'The Hags with the Bags'?
Dublin. Everybody knows that, if they've read Gnomon's Entry on the Dublin Statue Trail.
  6. Where can you find people singing a legend about a freshwater mermaid?
On the Rhine.   Bel has the story about the Lorelei and her singing power.
  7. According to the Guide, what objects in India usually 'prove to be of no help whatsoever'?
Railway timetables. You guessed it. The Guide Entry by al_terego also advises against trying to queue for tickets: 'The resulting process represents the harmonious coming together of cultures in much the same way as a car accident might represent the harmonious coming together of a Ford Capri and a lamppost.' You heard it here.
  8. Which music style's preferred clothing was featured at the shop called Sex?
Punk rock.   Candi tells us all about it.
  9. What do firebrats eat?
Flour. According to this Entry by topher@cholesbury, this household pest eats flour.
  10. What epithet was applied to Dr Beeching, chairman of the British Railways Board?
The trainspotter's antichrist. Bluebottle's got the full story in his history of trains from (of course) the Isle of Wight.

We hope this quiz has served two purposes: to give you a chance to tickle the grey cells, and to convince you that there's a lot of interesting Stuff in the Edited Guide. If you spot a hole in the coverage, of course, you are contractually obligated to fill it. Get writing!

The full Mandelbrot Set, coloured to show convergence speed.
