Notes from All Over

What kinds of notes, you ask? Plaintive and a bit like a French horn.

There's this German word, see? It's called Fernweh, and it's the opposite of homesickness. Fernweh can generally be described as the strong desire to be somewhere else. No, not the feeling you have in the dentist's waiting room. A feeling of longing for, okay, excitement, adventure, and really wild things.

Another way to describe Fernweh is the way the German poet Eichendorff expressed it. He said he heard a post horn in the distance. It meant 'you've got mail', sure. But it also meant that far-away places were calling him.

We leave you to find the connection between a post horn and what's in the Post this week. There are Clues. (Read Bluebottle's blog.) There's excitement out there. There's a sense of longing. (Check out 'Duck Tails'.) There are some funny adventures going on. And, as usual, even NASA are up to wild things.

Have fun out there. Just remember to take your peril-sensitive sunglasses, and listen for the notes of the Post horn.
