A Conversation for h2g2 Announcements

kea ~ Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small, unregarded but very well read blue and white website

Sure, but you do realise that an elf is not a gnome and that you're risking a Serious Interspecies Incident by confusing them. There'll be no end of trouble now.

It was fun.

A bit of a shame Z felt the need to let everyone know he'd started that account, I had no idea it was him! I was looking forward to trying to figure out who it was smiley - biggrin

Elves and Gnomes were once the same. But the Gnomes decided to carry on with their old ways whereas the elves decided to sell out to mass consumerism and go work for a certain mythical figure.

Over the years they've changed in appearance, they've become thinner, a bit taller, and all look the same now. Too much cosmetics, beauty treatments, use of air brushes (don't ask) (really, don't ask) and they've basically homogenised their entire culture.

Gnomes stuck to their roots and didn't sell out to slave labour under the pretense of a free market. Gnomes know their place, which reminds me, I wore a stick out yesterday and need to go get a new one.

Gnomon - time to move on

In the earliest version of Tolkien's Middle Earth works, Elrond and his relatives were all called gnomes, rather than elves. Then they became Gnoldor, then Noldor, and eventually, the name "Noldor" came to be their race, and their species was Elves.

(Yes, Lil, it was lovely to see dasilva here. *waves and hopes he comes back*)

Hello everyone especially KB and kea

I'd no idea that the announcement threads were tweeted. I do know there'd been some discussion about tweeting threads, but I didn't know that this was happening.

smiley - mammoth

There genuinely wasn't anything to be in-the-know about, other than the upcoming mammoth smiley. And it certainly wasn't planned as a way to release the mammoth smiley, it just worked out that way.

What happened was a number of researchers, only some of them volunteers on the site, started riffing.

Was it an appropriate place to do that? Possibly not. Would I have stopped sooner if I'd know the thread had been tweeted? Definitely, which is a reflection I find rather telling.

smiley - mammoth

>> in the book that was published to showcase the best of h2g2 during the bid, how many threads like this were included? Now, I wonder why?

Interesting question that. The Book was the second h2g2 book I'd made on lulu.

The first book I made on lulu was based on a thread remarkably similar to this one. Basically, Pinniped started a thread on my personal space which I couldn't bear to lose, so I cut and pasted the whole thing into Lulu. That gave me the idea for The Book. I included Frenchbean's Christchurch Journals in the second book, but I agree, they were a different kind of thing than this spontaneous mayhem.

smiley - mammoth

So my feeling is that we probably shouldn't have let an Announcements thread turn into like that, even though the announcement was done and dusted, and that I wouldn't have taken it that far if I had known it was tweeted. So smiley - sorry on those two counts. But I also feel that worse things happen at sea; it's not the worst sin in the universe.

And, hell dammit, it was FUN. Anyone could join in and several people did. smiley - sigh

Ben

Personal hat on here...

The Announcement was made, it was a good announcement. So good in fact that it put everyone into a good mood and we had fun. Looking back would I have moved it? Nope. Why? It stemmed from here, it lived here.

The beeb would have closed the thread so any further announcements wouldn't have got lost, but, well, we're not the beeb. We could have closed the thread but why stop one of the first true light hearted conversations of randomness for a long time.

Was the smiley - mammoth planned? Only in so far as it was ready to go up around the same time as the smiley - hero was. We were going to get several others together maybe and release a new batch, but it fitted in so well with the laugh we were all having that we put it out early smiley - biggrin It's not a secret smiley, just a not yet documented one smiley - winkeye

So, I had fun, a lot of others had fun, and the gnomes got a day out from their wheels and cages. smiley - smiley

Hard to document smiley - mammoths when you thought they were extinct - but I'm sure the smiley - scientist will spot it eventually and put a description in the smiley list.
